by joli Jan 9, '05Hi there! It's that TIME where I pick my preceptorship in the nursing program. My choices are ER, DOU, med/surg, and OB. Should I pick something fun like ER or OB....or should I get use to med/surg, and pick med/surg or DOU? I am currently uncertain on what field of nursing to go into. Is med/surg a necessary step to take as a new grad? I want to learn a lot but I don't want to get burned out or completely overwhelmed.

Thanks for your reply. DOU is mainly a cardiac floor; lots of patients with CHF, MI and stuff like that. I really enjoyed my OB rotation, however the whole new nurse *must* go into med-surg keeps rearing its ugly head at me. Well, I have until March to think about it. Tomorrow, I start advance med-surg!
- Jan 9, '05 by SarasotaRN2bWhat do you mean *must*? If it is required that you do med-surg first before you can transfer into any other department per hospital regulations, than I guess I can understand. However, if not and you have no interest in med-surg, why not do what you would enjoy. It may be possible that during your preceptorship you might receive a job offer directly...
Anyway, best of luck and enjoy!
