Cannot work as RN where I must ambulate due to knee disorder. What now? I have a BSN.

by EBabsRN

Hello to all.

I had my first meniscus tear while in college and as a nurse tech student at a local hospital. I had surgery to cut that section out. I have since tore 2 other areas, while on the floor, which eventually led to bone on bone in both knees. Eventually, I had to have bilateral partial knee replacements. The first one went very well, but the second, well, I cannot even ambulate at length. I have been teaching at a vocational school in their adult ed. programs for MA, LPN, etc. for the last 8 years off and on.

I want so much to get back into nursing, but where could I go for employment without much floor experience as a RN, and what could I do? Teaching only affords me a few hours a week sometimes. It is also shuts down one entire month in the summer. I need to find employment, but would love some type of hands on where I would not have to stand very long.

I would really appreciate any assistance in this area of concern.

Thank you.

Not too hands-on.

What about a medical clinic, occupational health? There have been some other posts similar that had good ideas if you try searching.

what about applying w/ insurance companies? Blue Cross, has RN's that you can call to decide whether to go to the Dr, ask questions, etc... or as a school nurse? you might not run like in a hospital, but you'd have to walk a bit...

You may want to look into doing social services or case management. You do not have to do as much walking. ALso think about utilization review. That involves reviewing charts to see if the care meets insurance requirement.
