Best specialty for microbe enthusiast?

Hi

I am currently in school, going toward an associate's in nursing (2-yr RN). I really love microbiology and chemistry and am interested in how medicines are developed and fought. What's the best place for me as a nurse? Will I ever get to look into a microscope in the real world? Could I be involved with virus research?

Thanks in advance.
