anyone else changing careers to go into nursing?

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hi everyone!

Is anyone else here totally changing careers to go to nursing school? I guess I'm looking for a little encouragement that it's OK for me to want to get out of the corporate/business world that I HATE and go into nursing!

What are your thoughts and reasons? Here's a little about me -- I have a degree in Advertising and I've been in the business world for almost 5 years now. I just have no interest in business-related things, and I have no desire to climb the proverbial corporate ladder. To me, nursing seems like something totally different from that. I can't say I've had a passion for it my whole life, like some people can. It only just occurred to me about 6 months ago. But I just want something different -- I HATE sitting at a computer and being bored out of my mind for 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week!!

Anyone else in a similar situation?

Hi Amy,

I am actually only one class away from my Accounting degree (AA), and I've decided to pursue nursing. A long-time dream that never materialized until now. I just feel the need to do something worthwhile in my life and hopefully do good. I found myself starting to get blurry when I would see numbers, and I couldn't imagine doing that the rest of my life. I need variation and nursing definitely offers that.

You will find there are others on this BB who have also left the "business world" for nursing.

Good luck!

I think that if you decide to do something else go for it. I cannot imagine doing a job I hate for years and years.

Hi Amyrae, I currently work at an office (my last day is today becuase I start my RN program the 21st!) and I cant stand the 40 hrs of sitting at a desk either! I'm really looking forward to nursing and running away from the office (Ive been working part& full time here for over 2 years, ever since I was 18). :) I could never imagine spenging my life at an office job. Its just not me (and I guess not you either:))

Hi Amy! I feel exactly the same way. I was majoring in computers, but now I realized that I will not be able to stand sitting in front of a computer all day for the rest of my life. BORING!!! I want a job where I will move around and have variety and action. I also want to be something that my kids can be proud of when they get older. I haven't started school yet, but my daughter (age 5) is excited about it and says she wants to be a nurse when she grows up too. How cute! :) Good luck with whatever you decide!

I am! I have a BS in Environmental Science, and since then have been working in the business/computer world. ICK.

You are not alone.

I was tossing around the idea of nursing when I was in college, but my roommate talked me out of it (her mom is a nurse). I forgot all about it for 5 years, and just last summer that I realized when looking through the want ads that I really really really want to be a nurse! Since then I've talked to a lot of people who are doing the same thing. It's kind of like when you learn a new word, then you hear it all the time? Now for me all these nurses and nursing students are coming out the woodwork.

Me too, I've been working in the accounting field first as a secretary and then a technician for 13 years now. I am so tired of sitting at a desk all day, it makes me so sleepy. Of course, the advantage right now is I can work on my homework.

I have been taking my pre-reqs for nursing and have applied for the fall semester.

After taking some time off from my job (4 months) and returning 3 weeks ago, I definitely know that this is not what I want to be doing forever.

I can't say that I know for sure that nursing is it, but I need to give it a try and hope that my instincts are correct. If not, it will be a good learning experience.

I think you should go for it if you really feel the desire.

Take care

You are definely not alone! I'm another career changer -- have worked in accounting and insurance for many years. Just finishing up my AA in Business and will be starting my LPN program next week.

I had originally sigend up for the nursing program ten years ago, but found myself torn between corporate business and nursing. The last few years I have done accounting I kept thinking to myself.....I don't want to do this for the rest of my life. I am a people person and a problem solver. I think I will do well in nursing.

Good Luck to you Amy. Go for it!

I'm switching species actually. I've been a veterinary technician (nurse) since '94, an RVT (think Veterinary RN) since '97. I'm working my prereqs now for the cross-over to human medicine.

Nursing, no matter the species, is a rollercoaster ride. But, most days, it only takes oine "up" to counter all the day's "downs".

I, too, am a career changer. I currently am a geographic information system specialist. What's that you ask? I make maps and manage data on computers. Sounds interesting you say? All I do all day long is type and click away on my mouse. Really, a monkey could do this.

I already have a bachelors, but am working on my pre-reqs so that I can go to a 2 year bachelors program starting in summer 2004. It sure is nice to get a paycheck right now and get benefits. Nursing will be a big change, but it will be nice to actually work face to face with people. There are far too many cubicle jobs and nursing seems to be such a diverse field. I look forward to finally going to nursing school!

Welcome, you've come to one of the right places.

There are areas of nursing where a background in business is a distinct asset.

Nursing is a great field because there are so many different things you can do within it. The thing that keeps me in nursing, as opposed to those other areas I've been educated in, is that you never question whether what you do is important, or of help to people, or if you made a difference in someone's life. As an educator the connection isn't quite as direct but it is still there. Nurses work with people at an intimate, fundamental level, often when they are dealing with the most important issues of their lives. It is humbling to be such an intimate part of a stranger's life; to know that for a time it is up to you to hold their lives safe, that you serve because beacuse someone must and you choose to do so, not because you have to but because each day you choose to be of service in ways that other people can't even fathom or understand.

Nursing is also backbreaking, heartbreaking, soul searing, dirty, and sometimes nasty work. In a word, human.
