So here's my problem... I have been working on a med/surg floor in a small hospital for almost a year. I was hired with the manager knowing that I eventually wanted to transfer to OB. So when my 90 days were up I went ahead and put in my transfer so that when a position came open, I would be first in line. So about three months ago a position came open, and my manager said the job was mine as soon as she found someone to replace me. Well since our med/surg floor has a high turn over rate, every time she hires someone, someone else seems to quit so my transfer keeps getting pushed to the side but they have been cross training me in OB when the census is low on m/s so that soon i can go over to OB full time. Well, yesterday I found out a new graduate was hired on the OB floor.... While I'm still in on the m/s schedule at least through November... I feel like this isn't fair. I feel like that was my position that they just gave away to someone else. Am I wrong to feel like this? I feel like I should confront management about it but I'm somewhat shy when it comes to this stuff and I have confrontation. But I feel like I keep getting pushed to the side and walked over... And I was promised that job... Any advice??

Unless you had the job offer in writing there isn't really much you can do. But I would talk to a manager about it anyways. It doesn't sound fair but management usually has their own agenda.

I agree. You cannot do much legally if you have nothing in writing. I'm not surprised that this happened. It sucks and I'm sorry you're getting the run around. Continue to cross train when possible so when the time comes you are ready to transfer.

Are you union? This is one of the benes of unionization that you'd have first dibbs.

If you have a collective bargaining agreement (i.e. your facility is unionized), you need to consult the contract and see what it says. If your employment is "at will", I'm not certain what, if any recourse you have.

Who knows if this new grad has other credentials or experience that you don't? If you didn't get negative feedback while cross training on OB, then you might ask what you could do to ensure the next spot is yours. Management get real loose lips when we ask how we can work harder. If you trust someone on that floor, it wouldn't hurt to ask for the scuttlebutt.
