Nurses Career Support

here's my situation..

i am a bsn/rn graduated in may 2003, i started working as a nurse in may 2004. my boyfriend and i plan to move, i have always wanted to move, and am considering going to grad school somewhere in the northeast.

my boyfriend is a certified nursing assistant, not currently working as one, with plans to start school towards his adn in january.

should i move with him in january and have approx. 7 months of experience under my belt or is it better to let him move, be apart for 5 months and then once i have my year of experience i move too?

my job is okay, i don't love it, i don't really even like it but it pays good and i'm getting good experience.

if he moves without me for a semester he'll probably just go to a school 4 hours from where we live and once that semester ends he'll transfer his credits to a school up in the northeast and we'll move together. if i move with him in jan. then we'll go to the northeast together, most likely.

so should i move with 6/7 months of experience or should i wait it out until i have 1 year of experience?

Wait until you have more experience and he has his degree.

If you really want to move, contact some of the hospitals in that area and see what they have to say about the experience you already have and whether or not they are hiring folks of that experience level, and at what pay rate. That way you can weigh all your choices.

If it were me, I'd wait until spring since it would be warmer then and you are moving farther north (but that's just me! :chuckle )

Wait until you have more experience and he has his degree.

he will not be getting his degree where we currently live, it's a long story. he will be moving away from where we live to go to school. i'm debating whether it makes sense for me to move now or wait another 6 months until i have 1 year of experience.

I understood that when I first answered you.

I think that you should base it on your relationship; how strong it is and what your future plans are with him. Also look into hospitals in that area, and apply to them and interview with them. I wouldnt move until I had a job set up already, but depending on where you are you may not have a problem at all. Also, if you wait another 4 months, or until you have a year exp., you can apply for a travling position.

Try putting your resume out, and see if you can get hired on where you are going to move......If it is a definate that you are going to move.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

I think this is a situation you will need to consider in full, as you seem to be doing. I just transfered to another unit and I've only had about 7 months under my belt but they accept new grads so it wasn't a problem. It isn't just about waiting the year out for experience, as others have listed; consider your relationship and the strength or weakness of going ahead with it in another location. Will it benefit you to wait considering job, experience, pay, your relationship, your family, your HAPPINESS etc or is it best to just wait it out and then move when things are better suited? Your boyfriend seems to be getting things organized in his own life as well.

Only you can answer the prominent question of what is best but as far as transfering, it is not unheard of to transfer before 1 year's experience. Just be sure you take care of you first and foremost.

it looks like i've decided to make the move, however, i will probably wait until feb. or march to go, while he will be starting school in jan.

the move is only a 3-4 hour car drive, so it's pretty close.

we've been together for over 5 1/2 years now, and the relationship is heading towards engagement and marriage, so i feel confident in that. he is not putting any pressure on me to move, i actually would like to try out another field in nursing and see this as the perfect opportunity. i graduated with my bsn in may '03, and began working as a rn in may '04. i'll have about 9 months of experience before i move.

at this point i'm still just trying to decide when i will move, i feel pretty confident that i have finally made the decision that i will move :)
