Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) Recertification

The CNE credential must be renewed after five years. To apply for recertification, the applicant may choose one of two options:

Option 1:

Meet the eligibility requirements for CNE certification renewal, perform a professional self-assessment, and document participation in continuous quality improvement activities relevant to the academic nurse educator role.
Option 2:

Meet the eligibility requirements for CNE certification renewal and successfully complete the CNE examination before the certification expiration date.

During the 5-year period of recertification, at least 50 activities should be documented, if one chooses Option 1. This whole process seems rather complicated and laborious. I think I will choose Option 2, when my certification renewal comes due in March, 2011. All this requires is retaking and passing the CNE examination.

Suitable activities for Option 1 include attending educator conferences or seminars, employing an innovative learning strategy in the clinical setting or classroom, hosting an educational chat session, taking an educational course for credit, submitting an article for publication, creating a formative or summative evaluation tool, and serving as a mentor for a new faculty member, among many others.
