Welcome to the Forum - General Aussie Chat

World Australia

Published

Having been guilty myself of hijacking threads saying hello and just chatting to my fellow Aussies I thought it might be worthwhile for us to have a thread that is just dedicated to general Aussie chat. We can then discuss issues like the Morris - oops Davis inquiry in Queensland and what it will mean for Q health and for the rest of Australia.

We can talk cricket, sport and anything else that is just us.

Say hello to new members dropping by.

Generally find out what is happening in the rest of the country.

I will make this thread a "sticky" so that it will always be at the top of the forum.

HI I was also a bit shocked when I saw all of the american postings and not and ausie in sight

I just signed up tonight

I am a 2nd year nursing student. My course is online. I came across this site while I was searching for research articles on VAC Dressings. Any way I best get back to work or I'm going to fail this subject.

gwenith has done a great job setting up this -general aussie chat- sooooo, let's make use of it!

ok, so did anyone attend the protest marches for the new/proposed ir laws????

what do you think of them?

will nurses be greatly affected in real terms?

are we good enough negotiators to ensure we are taken care of?

Hi Grace

I personally am worried - very worried because so much of the industrial action by nurses have centered on patient care and professional development.

I personally would LOVE to hear from my fellow nurses about how they feel as I might (just might) be in a position to actually get those concerns to someone who can do something about this (no promises!)

I'm soooo angry :angryfire !!!! my friend is waiting for her registration with QNC and they can't tell her anything. When she sent the application, she was told that it takes 10 working days, but this was 3 weeks ago :uhoh21: , today she was told that it will take at least another 10 days. She has an application with DIMIA for her working visa and they are waiting for the registration to give her the visa. She has a job offer and they are also waiting for the registration :uhoh3: , she can't work as a RN if she's only eligible for registration (like other professionals can) she needs that piece of paper. Now her visitor visa expires and she has to go back to Europe and wait there (few days) to get the registration and working visa and then retun to Australia, and this is very expensive :crying2: .

Hi all - I know I'm a few days late on this, but :angryfire - bloody Howard!

I was on nights at the beginning of the week, and couldn't march, though I felt enormously guilty about not going. I marched in July, though, so I guess that's something. Before I get on to the evils of these changes, what was the story with Sydney? Melbourne - well over 150,000; Sydney - 30,000!

Like gwenith said - on the money as always! - nurses are prepared to take action when it will improve patient care, but are less willing to do so when it's about us. And I get how hard it is - most of us are in nursing at least partly for humanitarian reasons. Knowing that industrial action will cause patients, and our colleagues, hardship is a strong disincentive. Taking action for our patient's benefit is one thing, standing up for our own interests seems to many to fly in the face of the whole raison d'etre of nursing.

I can make more money more easily doing something other than nursing - I'm still here because I enjoy it and I feel as though I make a difference. But I'm not prepared to do so at the cost of my way of life. Penalties make up an enormous part of my salary, as I remember whenever I take LSL. Take those away, and the extra leave, and the other conditions we've all fought so hard for, and I'm gone.

I'm conflicted on how affected nurses will be, at least in the short term. Long term, there's no doubt in my mind that we'll lose penalties and other entitlements.

I predict, though, that there won't be any significant changes until after the next election - the Libs'll turn around and say "See? We told you the ALP were making a mountain out of a mole hill," get re-elected again! Then screw us over.

Hoo Boy! Do I know THAT song - ICU there are just not enough of us here, Not enough agency nurses with appropriate Quals not enough people to go around. Bit sad when you have contacted EVERY agency in town and still are coming up 2 - 3 staff short for the shift.

Happy Holidays everyone too - got to go now I have to start work an hour early tonight - more OT!!

Violence on the streets of Sydney. Never seen the likes of it in Australia before. Certainly not to this extent.

Who do we blame?

Do we blame anyone at all?

Was it inevitable?

Will it escalate into more of the same?

Is there a message in it?

Wonder what YOU think?
