The most frightening night of my life didn’t take place on Halloween. Almost 20 years later, it still sends chills up my spine and makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up when I remember it!

It was the day from Hell, and we couldn't even blame it on the full moon or Friday the 13th. An ordinary day at an average assisted living facility turns into a scene from a battlefield as the casualty count rises by the hour, causing one paramedic to suggest (facetiously, of course) that the staff needed to stop pushing people downstairs. Here's how it all happened.

We (Americans) live in a death-defying, death-denying society where the inevitable outcome is frequently prolonged through futile treatments and heroic measures. A cultural shift must occur regarding peoples' views on death and dying because, even in the face of top-notch medical technology and countless interventions, all living people will die. Death, just like birth, is a very natural part of the circle of life.

From that start of nursing school most of us are looking forward to graduation day. It is a moment when we can take a deep breath before taking the NCLEX and celebrate all our hard work over the past year or more. We have made friends, learned to think like a nurse, and are one step closer to being a nurse. Feelings of graduation vary some do not even attended others are thrilled to share with their fellow students a completed hard earned goal.

Kate, a nurse who works on an adequately staffed acute rehab unit inside a specialty rehabilitation hospital, says, "This shift has been so busy!" She also adds, "I became so excited when one of my patients walked for the first time since the motor vehicle accident six weeks ago!" The purpose of this article is to discuss rehabilitation nursing, which is a specialty in its own right.

An experienced nurse's view of some of the issues that contribute to errors in medication administration, which is one of the most vital tasks we perform in this profession. WARNING: all of the incidents portrayed herein really happened, and real nurses and med techs were involved. They are not for the faint of heart nor the easily freaked-out.

A letter of reflection, a plea for forgiveness, a note of encouragement for ED, ICU, and Floor Nurses, who work so hard with sometimes so little, understand where the "family members from hell" are coming from. A gentle nudge to remind that the person lying in that bed belongs to the heart of those around them. Ultimately, this is a note of deep, deep gratitude. I could never do what you do and I am so very thankful that you chose your current role. You are unique, powerful, and so important. Kindly remember. At the end of the day--remember.

Freshly off of graduation, I was placed as an in charge nurse of an Emergency Department. I will never forget the day when a father carried his son into the room covered in dripping blood. It changed my whole life. I'm sharing this incident with you hoping that it will encourage you to continue learning. To never give up and to make sure this is the career you want.

Healthcare costs are rising dramatically especially in a person’s last year of life. Solutions to cut dramatic rises in Medicare spending on the elderly and decreasing the burden we leave for the future generation are; using futility as criteria in limiting inappropriate care, promoting the use of advance directives and spending healthcare money wiser by the development of value based healthcare.

In the 19 years that I was active as a volunteer EMS member of my local fire department (2 years NREMT-Basic + 17 years NREMT-Paramedic), I was often amazed at the difference between a "scene" on the day of getting a call, versus the same location a day or two...

Five years ago, I never dreamed of becoming a nurse. I wanted nothing to do with the medical world. Partly because my dad wanted me to be a Doctor and I didn't want to. Well, I did attend LPN school somewhat grudgingly because of the job prospects. A few months working in the nursing home and I totally hated the politics, impossible expectations and just plain victimization and lack of support.
