Should I Carry Malpractice (Liability) Insurance?

May 13, '09 - Nurses can be sued at any time, for any reason. Often, allegations brought against you are unfounded, but just being named in a lawsuit gives one pause and can be one of the most stressful times in your life. The nurse feels embarrassed and fears damage to a perfect reputation.

    The Grateful Nurse Speaks

Oct 30, '12 - Yet another perspective on nursing from the author of "The Cynical Nurse Speaks" and "The Political Nurse Speaks". Here are a few of the aspects of our chosen profession that we seldom have the luxury of considering in the rush of tasks and documentation that must be completed before the end of our day.

Used Nursing To Start My Business

Feb 6, '09 - As a nurse I never thought I would be in the position I am in now. I used my nursing skills and certifications to start a small DBA. I just closed the books for Jan, 09 and my wife and I netted after everything $158,000. Not too shabby for being in business only 4...

Are we forcing team work but shying away from relationships

Dec 20, '12 - Over the years there have been many changes for the better in healthcare and nursing. Along the way we have lost the natural ability to work as a team and we are reluctant to socialize with each other outside work-is there a connection with the 'poor' team work many of us experience.

You Might Be The Last Person Whom The Patient Sees Before He Dies

Dec 18, '12 - In a nutshell, nurses and others who work in the healthcare sector should strive to treat all patients with professionalism and respect during each encounter. It is very possible that you might be the last person who ever sees or touches the patient before he dies.

You Don't Belong Here (a nursing ghost story)

Nov 1, '12 - Although it's not Halloween any more, it IS All Soul's Day! Since my last story was deemed a little more sad than spooky, I thought I'd go for a straight-up Scary Story to Tell in the Dark. In this tale, a travel nurse gets asked to assist at another hospital near her current locale. But it's always a little disconcerting when you arrive at a new hospital...

Jumping at Shadows: A Haunted Hospital Story

Dec 16, '12 - In this corner of the world, there is a saying of the chronically exhausted which speaks of the measure of a tired and addled mind: jumping at shadows. The term comes from moments when a worn down brain whines its protest at a lack of REM sleep by projecting shadowy apparitions which dart at the edge of peripheral vision, appearing to be anything from random deer to running people and, well, making you jump.

The Boy at the Bottom of the Stairs

Nov 15, '12 - The guiding principles of nursing and parenthood are essentially the same. Our patients afford us the opportunity to help other human beings, to be "Samaritans"; our children sometimes remind us what it means to be a truly good person in this world. The holidays, more than anything, are a time to reflect on what is important ...

    My NCLEX story...

Oct 4, '12 - The NCLEX exam is one of the major milestones in a nurse's career. NCLEX is a long, stressful, and sometimes frightening journey that we, nurses, unfortunately have to take. I'm sharing my story to hopefully inspire those who are still to take this exam, that they may continue to hold on, never lose focus, and see the light at the end of the tunnel.

    Dear Family Members

Dec 9, '12 - This open letter is aimed at the difficult, belligerent family members out there who give bedside nurses a hellish time. I know you love the patient who is laying in that bed very much. Not only are we here for the patient, but we are also here to support you during this critical time. Just meet us halfway, please. A little bit of mutual respect can go a long way in fostering goodwill.

Should Healthcare Be Funded As A Basic Human Right?

    • Closed

Dec 3, '12 - This article looks at funding healthcare as a basic human right. It examines what is a basic human right. It looks at the need for re-examinaton of the health care system in the United States. Is health care a right or a privilege? By looking at the number of uninsured and who they are, we ask if everyone has the same access to health care. We examine traditional methods of funding and use the Medicare model as a framework.

Do you cut corners in your daily nursing practice?

Dec 8, '12 - Nurses are overworked and some will cut corners to manage all their day to day activities. Are the corners that get cut saving time or are they costing the patients dearly? Do we know when we are cutting corners in our practice or has it become a habit or routine that we no longer acknowledge it?

    The Waiting Game

Dec 8, '12 - This is my favorite memory of my years in rehab nursing. It changed the way I cared for patients and their families. It's the story of the experience of an elderly woman near certain death, and how it changed the way of thinking for all involved. It's a feel good story as well as humorous, kinda creepy and certainly an eye opener for all of us involved. Especially me, as I found myself changing the way I did things and made me more aware spiritually.

    The Humorous Nurse Speaks

Nov 10, '12 - Dealing with issues such as life, death, and other matters of consequence in our daily work lives, nurses tend to develop a rather jaded---OK, warped---sense of humor. It's almost a matter of survival; otherwise, we'd probably go off the deep end. (It's not for nothing that we happen to have the best collection of "code brown" stories on the planet.) Here's a peek at a few of the things one R.N. finds irresistibly funny.
