I am an athlete! Well, I once was. After nursing graduation, NCLEX, new grad employment followed by marriage and two children … my athletic prowess dwindled over the past five years. However, I still feel athletic. You are only as young as you feel! Right?

Mental illness is not always confined to one individual, or the result of one specific occurrence. Sometimes there's a long history to be taken into consideration. In light of Mental Illness Awareness Month, I submit to you my story.

It was a chilly spring day, the wan sunlight trickling over the rooftops of houses and through new spring leaves as it slipped toward the western horizon. My Dad and I, out for a Sunday afternoon stroll in the neighborhood, pressed up a steep hill that opened from the residential neighborhood into the staff parking lot of the city hospital.

The first semester of Nursing school is considered the "shocker" courses, because that is exactly what it is, a shocker. However, with adequate rest, creating good study habits at the beginning of the semester, you will be able to succeed. I found that I was struggling for a while, until I finally realized what I was doing wrong. My advice for all first semester Nursing students is to remember that you are not alone in this, and a lot of people are going to be feeling the same way you are. Just relax, and don't worry about hearing about the horrors of Nursing school. Just look at my advice for the first semester, and to "Just Keep it Moving!"

I thought I’d compile some basic information/answers to the questions we see here over and over. This is a work in progress. Please feel free to point out any errors. Thanks!

Whether its who you know or not, 2.5 GPA vs 4.0, previous CNA/Tech/LPN experience or none, BSN or ADN - You've got to get out there and make something happen for yourself! Faxing in the good ol' resume just doesn't cut it anymore. Be PROACTIVE.

With just two years in the Army Nurse Corps, it's time to deploy! Nine months away sounds like a nice little break, right? Sometimes things happen when you least expect them, and reminders of why you do what you do come at the strangest times.

This is a story about a nurse whose serious mental illness gradually takes over her life and career to the point where she can no longer perform the duties of the job she once loved, and on which she has expended so much of her considerable energy and dedication over the years.

Have you ever been a patient in the hospital? If not, count yourself very lucky. If you haven’t had the experience, you can use your imagination. What made the experience a memorable one.......good or bad?? As we go through each day, let's try to imagine what we would think if we were in the patient's place. Let's be the nurse that we would want as a patient.

As relatively few outside the mental health community know, May is Mental Health Awareness Month. During the next few weeks, I hope AN members will join me in sharing information and educating ourselves and others about psychiatric illness and its costly---and often devastating---consequences to both sufferers and to society.

How many times has one of your friends or family monopolized on the fact that you were a nurse? “Hey Sis, so my poop is green.. what’s wrong with me?”; “Hey best friend! So the other day I was at the club and, well you know me, drinking a bit too much and I blacked...

It's easy to become complacent about the difficulty level of a nursing program, especially if you have been doing well in your pre-reqs. However, realize that it's not anything like you have ever done in other classes. Do not underestimate it, expect it to be hard, and most importantly, be prepared.

What does it mean to be a Star Thrower? Beginning nursing school is a large feat to undertake and a journey that will inevitably change our cores. It is essential to remember the fundamental reasons as to why we wish to become nurses, and to build upon those aspirations through the process of this experience. May my own perspective ignite a greater sense of purpose to the enduring student nurse...

The birth of a child is supposed to be one of the happiest times of a woman's life. Sadly, for approximately 15% of women, it can be the exact opposite. Postpartum depression is a recognized mental health disorder that has gained greater awareness in recent years. Here is the story of one new mother's struggle with postpartum depression.
