Prevalence of Christians in the field of nursing

Nurses Spirituality

Published

I will be making a career change, from the banking industry to nursing. Thought about it over the past year. In my industry, Christians are far and few between. I suppose much of this has to do with the main focus being, money.

Wondering about the prevalence of Christians in the nursing field? I know much of this has to do with what area of the country one works. Also, non-Chrisitans may not be looking out for Christians in the workforce. I know in my industry, I feel alone, to say the least.

Sorry, let me clarify--empty of the Living Spirit of God which has been given to us freely and is available to all. Of course, I wasn't implying non-believers are void of emotion or anything like that, as Christians were non-believers at one point and the Spirit of God was added to them. And it can given to you, as well, if you really desire it.

I think I'm OK on that - thank you. The Living Spirit of God has told me that the power to discern who has or has not this Spirit would not be put in the hands of human beings. I understand that you are coming from a place of generosity and wanting to share with others the blessings you believe you have, though and I thank you for that.

Coincidentally, God actually has given us the power to discern who has the Spirit and who may simply say it. And the Bible says time and time again that we are judge those who claim to be followers of Christ but who bear no fruit. But, anyway that's way off topic and I appreciate your transparency. God bless

Isn't it a little arrogant for you to say you have the ability to discern who's a real Christian, and who isn't?

That would indeed be an interesting study! It's interesting, but one could search day and night, without any success of finding any journal of this sort in my industry (banking industry).....

Journal of Christian Nursing

A quick Google search will find a deep connection between Christianity and Nursing. An almost non-existant relationship between Christianity and Banking. Which is probably why the banking industry has been plagued by unethical practices for years.

Oh no, it's not arrogant at all. In fact, it's laid out rather clearly in the Bible on what a person displays who is truly Christian. We are, actually, told to be judgmental of those who claim to be Christian but don't show it. Coincidentally, that was what Christ did quite often... Tell people who claimed to be religious and holy that they were actually spiritually dead and headed for death. See, it's not much different today. I invite you to read the Bible for yourself and you might be surprised...Christians are not based what you call yourself, but the status of your heart, which is plain to all people by the fruit in your life. And by 'fruit' I mean the 'fruit of the spirit' which is plainly described as love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. It's It's a daily struggle to live that way in this world, but God gives you the ability to rise above circumstances. Thanks for asking!

What happened to "Judge not..."? Funny, I find what you post to be contrary to those fruits of the spirit and the teachings of Jesus.

Glad you brought that up! I was waiting for someone to say that... It's one of the most misused texts. Firstly, you, like almost all others, are not even quoting the entire text. In context it reads "Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, Let me take the speck out of your eye, when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye." As you can see, in context, the verse is referring to judging a person wherein the person judging is guilty of the same judgement--that person is then told to 'take the log out of his eye', or repent of his actions which may be worse than the person he's accusing, and then 'remove the speck', which is then to tell your brother to repent of his. Moreover, there are a vast array of other verses that support the judgment of brothers (meaning those in the faith). For example, John 7:24 'Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgement.' Indeed, there are multiple examples of this righteous judgement of believers by other believers in the text, and if you are truly interested I could go through them with you, but just for now realize that this common misconception of 'judge not' for all things is not accurate. I will add though, that the teachings of Jesus are to not judge those who don't claim to be Christians, for this is left to God...so you can apply 'judge not' to those circumstances, just don't use that commonly used text for support because that is not what it is saying. Just realize that it's all based in love for each other to help each other when we stumble. So, it actually is not contrary to the fruit, rather it embodies them. I invite you to read the Bible for yourself, it's really the only way for people to clarify some of these commonly held misbeliefs and misconceptions.

The best nurses I know are either agnostic or atheist. So, religion has nothing to do with it IMO. Actually, the best people I know are not religious. They live for the here and now, not the afterlife.

Don't worry sister, you have fellow believers around you where ever you go. Don't mind the cold comments on here by the mass of empty non-believers--I always am entertained by people who claim to be athiests or non-Christitans coming onto Christian threads or Christian websites (like the Christian Post) and spewing their hate and intolerance of Christians (they can only judge Christianity by its abuse). But, that's a price for living in this broken world, I guess. The best thing is just to remain steadfast in faith and be filled with the Spirit so to be an example with the fruit in your life. Hopefully, because of your light, people will come to Christ. Continue the faith and God bless!

A lovely sentiment, however, coming to Christ is not an ideal part of nursing practice. It is about patients, not us. Just because someone may not be a Christian, doesn't mean they are an atheist. Further, nurses are no less ethical, kind, or learned because of their religious beliefs.

Pray for the souls of the non-believers, the sort of believers,or the other-than Jesus believers in the privacy of your own home or church. Unless one works for a church or other religious organization, it has no place in the workplace, other than to see to the spiritual needs of our patients, which may be vastly different than our own. And that's OK.
