    Hi Everyone!

I am a RN. I have been a nurse since 2007. I am also an artist with a BA in painting.
Please participate in my project "The Power to Heal: Notes by Nurses".

I am collecting images of nurses hands (LVN, CNA, RN) to display in an art exhibit.
Also I am looking for your words about what you think healing is as a nurse. I will incorporate these two elements into painting and installation work. I will also collect and
organize these elements online as an online art exhibit.

    Elizabeth J Kellerman

This project tells the public what it means to be a healer from the words and hands of nurses. When a patient makes their way through the hospital or clinic it is the nurses who literally touch them and guide them through this process. It is the nurse’s hands that are the conduit of healing through the stages of life.

What is healing? How is it that something that is broken can grow again from seemingly nothing? How does the process of healing affect the caregiver and how does the everyday caregiver experience healing?

The goal of my work is to gather nurse’s perception of healing using online media and incorporate this knowledge with images of nurse’s hands. The synthesis of these two aspects will be shared with the public in the form of visual art. The medium of representation involves images of nurse hands transfer to large panels with gel medium. I will also use gauze, the traditional cloth of wound care to give texture, light and fluidity to the words of healing from nurses and a surface to hold the nurse’s words.

    About me:
First I was an artist. With my bachelors in painting, I worked painting not only my own pieces, but as a freelance painter doing faux painting and frequently painting sets for theatre, television and sometimes film. I left the freelance world and entered nursing to explore humanistic themes such as life, death, healing and community health and for a stable income. After several years in the ICU I found myself burnt out and returning to my painting. In my painting I am exploring my love of science and my interest in the healing arts. I want to bring voice to nursing through the powerful medium of visual arts. I want to make visible the insights and character of nursing.

    Please submit:

  4. Your project sounds very lovely. I'd happily send you a photo of my hands, but, i don't have a photo of my hands. My daughter has a cell phone that takes photos, i'll ask her to take a picture of my hands, for your art project of nurses' hands. Just my hands, or, my hands on someone? or doing anything in particular?

I put a "maybe" for your poll question, about "do you consider yourself a healer?" as i am not entirely certain what the word 'healer' means to you.
for some ppl, the word "healer" has an almost magical or mystical meaning, and i have no magical abilities whatsoever. None.

Also, i see my role as more assisting in healing, not the direct or sole cause of healing. Guess every nurse is different, but, that's how i see *my* role.

I am almost never responsible by myself, for many (if any) of the healings, see? It's not just *me*, it is almost invariably a team effort, tons of other healthteam members, other caregivers and family members all participating together, as well as the patients own efforts.
Much of my efforts and actions are based on tons of researchers and scientists whose faces are unknown to us, seasoned nurses and teachers who taught me how to do things, etc.

it's not just *me*, is my point.

even in the very very few times, i was all alone outside the hospital, doing CPR or whatever, even those moments, were not just *me*, but, the result of scientists, researchers who came up with the steps to do, and teachers who taught me.
