Transfusions less common

  1. It was just three years ago that eight out of 10 heart-surgery patients at Medical College of Virginia Hospitals received blood transfusions. Today, that number has dropped to about two in 10 thanks to medical, safety and financial changes.

    And studies that showed transfusions lowered immunity. Pts who received transfusions had increased risk for infection, morbidity, and mortality.

    I think anyone who did bedside nursing used to see transfusions that were unnessary. Glad to see that changing.
