Social Justice as a core value

by HM2VikingRN Staff

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/q...&dopt=Abstract
Caring is best demonstrated by a nurse's ability to embody the five core values of professional nursing. Core nursing values essential to baccalaureate education include human dignity, integrity, autonomy, altruism, and social justice.

It is our proud history.

Lavinia Dock, a pioneer public health nurse, settlement worker, educator, suffragist, historian, and social activist. http://stti.confex.com/stti/bcscienc...aper_26370.htm

Dorothea Dix, mental health & prison reform, Civil War nurse - http://www.webster.edu/~woolflm/dorotheadix.html

Lillian Wald, founder of Public Health Nursing - http://www.jwa.org/exhibits/wov/wald/

Mary Breckinridge - http://causes.goldenmoon.org/legends/mbreckenridge.html

Florence - http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/REnightingale.htm - "Military officers and doctors objected to Nightingale's views on reforming military hospitals. They interpreted her comments as an attack on their professionalism and she was made to feel unwelcome. Nightingale received very little help from the military until she used her contacts at The Times to report details of the way that the British Army treated its wounded soldiers. John Delane, the editor of newspaper took up her cause, and after a great deal of publicity, Nightingale was given the task of organizing the barracks hospital after the battle of Inkerman and by improving the quality of the sanitation she was able to dramatically reduce the death-rate of her patients."

What is "Social Justice"? - A collection of definitions
by Derrick Kikuchi, Reach and Teach

Social justice means moving towards a society where all hungry are fed, all sick are cared for, the environment is treasured, and we treat each other with love and compassion. Not an easy goal, for sure, but certainly one worth giving our lives for! - Medea Benjamin, co-founder Global Exchange and Code Pink
Social justice means complete and genuine equality of all people. Not exactly stuff for Bartlett's, but there you go.
- Paul George, executive director Pennisula Peace and Justice Center
Social justice provides the foundation for a healthy community. It grows out of our sense that each person — each created being — has value. Only as we recognize the value and dignity of each person can we build a healthy community, so it's a slow, painful process of learning and growing. To help the process along we develop attitudes of respect for one another. We also shape policies and patterns of behavior to protect and enhance the worth of each person. We do this by building governmental and economic structures, educational and religious institutions, and all the other systems that provide for health and social welfare. This justice is not a goal that we'll ever reach, but a process, a struggle in which we can be engaged through all the pain and all the joy.
- Doug King, editor and WebWeaver, The Witherspoon Society of the Presbyterian Church USA

I very much admire and encourage all opinions. We are all enriched to read:

I choose to believe that we as a people will continue to see the nessesity for the social programs we have in place and CHANGE the ones that are not working the way they were originally meant to.We are intelligent enough to CREATE ones that fit the needs of the populace, all of us, not just the 15% uninsured. This past 6 years has been devastating to the physche of this country, such negativity and mistrust.Hate mongers, like Limbaugh and others have perpetuated this, my opinion. Its time to vote in a government we can trust, we need to demand EXCELLENCE, from those candidates .

I hope we shall crush in its birth the aristocracy of our monied corporations which dare already to challenge our government to a trial by strength, and bid defiance to the laws of our country. Thomas Jefferson
