Or maybe some reverse sexism by female researchers who believe that men who are promiscuous deserve to get prostate or penile cancer?

If that's true (which I seriously doubt), it's not right either.

BTW, I collect old medical books, and in the pre-antibiotic era, some researchers tried to develop vaccines for syphilis and gonorrhea. Someone even made an acne vaccine, which didn't work either.

She had no other risk factors and had been on the pills for over a year.
I think that girls taking BCP are high risk of blood clots. My 20yr cousin had a massive stroke while on BCP and it took several months of PT before she regained full function and was able to return to work.

"Package inserts mention the risk of blood clots. The inserts say that for women ages 20 to 44, one in 2,000 will be hospitalized, Gonzalez reported." from http://www.nbc6.net/health/5421876/detail.html

I would be more inclined to think it was the BCP or possibly a combination of the two that caused your friends daughter's massive blood clot, and I wonder when they were testing the vaccine how many women they looked at that were on BCP as part of the study.

Hopefully, someone will post some more definitive answers as more news/studies come out.

Exclamation Re: Merck suspends lobbying for Gardasil vaccine
There is no way my girls are getting it. They're both under 10 and if it gets mandated here I'm declining it.

I talked to a mom (who's a pharmacist) at a ball game last year who said her girls would not be getting the vaccine because her neighbor's daughter had recently rec'd it and was in the hospital - paralyzed. I hadn't heard of any adverse reactions at the time so I was shocked that they were linking it to the vaccine. Haven't seen that mom since, so don't know if they diagnosed her with Guillian-Barre or what her outcome was, but the family was (naturally) distraught and furious.

I'm sorry for your friend's loss.

I haven't heard of anyone I know personally having really serious reactions to the vaccine, but I have heard, over and over again, that the injection is often extremely painful.

That it would be mandatory makes no sense to me because HPV is not transmissible by casual contact, nor is it a disease with immediate consequences, and that just isn't the case with those other diseases.

The problem is really with the FDA - lack of regulation is causing serious problems with the safety of both our food and pharma!

Fact: only 20% of the drugs we give our children are approved for use in children...children are not little adults there needs to be special attention given to them.

Yes- let's let capitalism run free and allow markets to dictate- only problem most consumers are not able to be educated in some areas- quality, safety, efficacy. Individuals cannot make informed choices in unregulated markets.

Corporations are not held the the ethical standards that medical professionals are- beneficience and non malfeasance mean nothing to big buisness. Especially Merck.....

I appreciate you posting this new information. I hadn't been aware of any news of potential increased risks with the HPV vaccine until you posted it here.[/quote]

I think the jury is still out on this one, I have heard short media blasts that some are questioning the true effectiveness. As a former Public Health Nurse who supervised a Teen Clinic, I have one major concern about this vaccine. The key to prevention is screening, screening, screening. My fear is that if girls get this vaccine, they will see no need to have another Pap Smear - ever. A pelvic exam is much more than a Pap - we tested for Chlamydia, Gonorrhea and all the types of Vaginitis. Some of these have little or no symptoms, especially Chlamydia, which can cause PID and sterility if left untreated. It is highly contageous, and very common. With every clinic we held, I would find at least one or two positive chlamydias, usually to kids who were asymptomatic. I hate to see this vaccine lull us into a false sense of security.
