No, I'm not. As I stated above ...

If they are unable to pay or work hard, then we need to assess the reasons for this.

There needs to be a distinction between unwilling to work and unable to work. But again, this seems to be drifting off-topic. From my personal experiences, I now have the pov that I shared (which I know is somewhat extreme), and don't feel the need to try to convince anyone to change theirs.

No, I don't believe healthcare is a "right". Period. (and I'm perfectly comfortable agreeing to disagree) :)

it would be really helpful to distinguish the "unwilling" and the "unable" to work..

I think health care for all should be a right in the same way that education is a right. It is true that we need to have responsibility for keeping ourselves healthier but I believe that providing good healthcare should be part of any social compact between people and their government.

I am less concerned about patients trying to 'game' the system than I am the many corporate entities such as hospitals, labs, pharmaceutical companies, medical practices, and insurance companies that have been making so much money off of our government and out of our own pockets. Recent articles in Time magazine and the New York Times are starting to reveal just how effectively these entities are gaming the system and with a great deal of impunity.

Thank you for that response...I am getting weary of the "only out for myself" mentality that is creeping into the center or our civil dialog.
Not only 'out for myself', but are we actually hearing nurses in this forum advocate that not everyone is entitled to health care, which provides our very occupations? Like tewdles said in another post: Wow.BTW tewdles- you remind me of Elizabeth Warren, Rock Star A#1. Super smart, unflinching and unyielding, and beautifully spoken.

I totally second those thoughts.

Hmmm, Senator Tewdles... Kinda has a nice ring to it

Hello, I'm new to this discussion. I wouldn't necesarily say health care is a basic human right, but it is a basic human need. Doesn't really matter if it is a right or not, the fact is people need it and there has to be some way to provide it for everyone. Is bigger government the answer? Is a free market in the abscence of crony capitalism the answer? Is charity the answer? No one has really proposed any solutions or honest facts in this thread, it's all been opinion and seems to have gotten out of control. How about a new thread where we can post some statistics and offer honest ideas about how to change or improve healthcare in the US? Keep it factual, honest, and free of emotion.

PPACA will destroy the health care system in America, which it is actually covertly designed to. Hence the thousand's of pages, the constant changes- to keep everyone guessing. The real intent of PPACA is to then establish, once and for all, a single payer system for everyone, after it has decimated the health insurance industry and eliminated the fee for service model, and the population then rises up like nothing we've seen since 1968. We're already very close to that anyway, since over half the country HAS a single payer- the feds. We have Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, Champus, VA, federal employees, and of course Congress- who passed, but don't want to have to buy into PPACA. It'll be taken care of fully within 5 years, then all these people complaining of 'other people's right to health care', will say? Wow. How civilized, and effective, and great this Medicare For All system is. WHY didn't someone think of this earlier? Then maybe we can close a few thousand military bases, to pay for it, so we'll have FREE as well as single payer health care? Like the civilized world?Tewdles for Prime Minister of Medicare For All!

I hope this is sarcasm. Otherwise it's pretty scary.

I get the impression many Americans want the US to become like Europe, take a look at their economy and how well that's all working out.

It's a fact. And WOW- how is THIS economy here working for you? You can't be one of the 1000's in AN looking for ways to find a job, eh?

We don't want to be like anybody but Americans.

We just want better access to our health care, at reasonable cost, and with better outcomes.
