What in the world just happen to insurance deductibles? I was just offered an AMAZING pay for a position in the MICU as a new grad (out-lying hospital paying higher than the medical center in Houston). I will have my start and explaining of all things on Feb 16th, but was given material to read before hand. First off, do hospitals now only offer health savings plans? I don't want my hard earned money just sitting in someone else's pocket. I've heard of health savings plans before the AHA, but it was always an option. Not a requirement. But the recruiter didn't know the details of the plans, so I have to wait to get clarification on this. So feeling uneasy about this, I started looking at possibly getting my own insurance through BCBStx. The deductibles are $6000 for a $170 plan, RIDICULOUS!! What happened to deductibles of $300. ARE THEY SERIOUS!!! No one is speaking on this!! This is HIGHWAY ROBBERY!! Come on now, $6000!! Who uses this much that is healthy before your benefits kick in. This should have been addressed in the State of the Union speech!!

What place does it have in the State of the Union speech? It is a private company doing what is legally permitted to do, and you may choose to buy the product or not.

I personally have not seen a $300 deductible plan since 2004.

Individual insurance plans purchased in the marketplace exchanges tend to have higher deductibles and premiums than group insurance plans offered through larger workplaces. It has always been this way. I was this way when I had private insurance purchased through an insurance agent in 2005.

I pay about $50 every two weeks for a group health insurance plan through my employer. The deductible is $1,500. Without my employer's contribution, this insurance would cost me $700 per month. Most employees do not know how much their insurance really costs them due to the employer's contribution.

I'm jealous of your plan! I pay nearly 400/month for my husband, my child, and myself. Deductibles are 2,500 each or a family deductible of 12,000. This one is through my employer. Dental is another 100/month.

I'd probably pay as much as you if I were insuring a family, but I'm a single person who is just insuring myself.

Welcome to the brave new world so many of you voted for. Enjoy.

Dang, that's terrible. I would hate having a deductible that much. Is this a family plan or just for yourself? I could understand a 6000 dollar deductible for a family of 4 but not one individual. I would definitely see what you can get on your own. You'll have to spend some time and do some research. Look into marketplace.gov or call uhc, humana, aetna, bcbs, any big insurance co. in your state. Find who offers the best deal, you can scope your search to what kind of figure your looking for your monthly premium to be, say you don't want to spend more than $120 per month. Then scope the deductible, say you dont want your deductible to be more than 2500.. Worked for me. Accordingly, I like the idea of my job not having a grip on my health insurance. Good Luck with your search!:writing:

@caroladybelle, slavery was legal, but look what happened with that! This is

not right, and people must make a stand to this. Then, you say choose to buy the product or not, lady, they ARE ALL THE SAME, and if you choose not to buy ANY THAT ARE ALL THE SAME, you will be hit with a stiff PENALTY! You do remember that right. 2nd and third years after this tax period will be the testing grounds for that, so I've been hearing. @commuter, I had group insurance with my school with BCBS and the deductible was $300, but I had

to buy the insurance a semester at a time. However, 2004 was not that long ago. I've always had individual insurance prior to being in school these last few years, and I ALWAYS had my deductible under $500--healthy and single. I was not looking for a subsidy, so no marketplace for me. I can now, fortunately, hold my own. I thank The Most High for that. This is a shame people, we are complaining, but as nurses, we have so much power as nurses, since in numbers, we surpass any other profession. Dr's lobby and they make a stamp on capitol hill with their small numbers. We have some there also, but they need all of us, and not some. We must start becoming active in our nurses association PAC's and invite others, if haven't already. This is a serious matter. What a good time to get involved in right now. @krypt.. its much deeper than that, but u r on to something. No way im discussing that on AN.com. see me I person, then we'll discuss.

This is not about slavery.

And there is a big difference between slavery and paying a higher deductible for insurance. I regret that you feel that they are similar, but I suggest that you speak to someone that has actually been a slave, and you may then recognize the difference.

For decades in this nation, many people have been protected from the real cost of healthcare in this nation. Now the real costs are becoming apparent, and disturbing to many.

Regardless, there are things that belong in the SOTU address and things that don't. Your personal complaint regarding the deductible does not, given that most an have elevated deductible. Especially, when now, at least you can get insurance without worries about preexisting conditions or completely being refused insurance like many previously in this nation.

The fact that you're comparing insurance premiums to slavery is ludicrous.

Find another job in the Houston metro area that offers better insurance benefits. There's plenty of them. And by the way, your current employer will not be sending the posse or the dogs to chase you down when you resign.

You're a free person in a free country. Learn it, live it, love it. But please do not compare trivial issues to slavery because it minimizes the systemic, social and physical dehumanization that revolves around slavery.

LOL!!! Since you can't see or know the people who respond to these posts, its never known the intention of these responses. To begin with, why would you @...lady.. start your reponse with a "why question" (non-therapeutic), and then throwing negative energy by stating how something doesn't belong, when clearly the posts concern was about the legitimacy of health savings plans and high deductibles. You clearly didn't have anything to say but throw shade, so why so grumpy? Are you having problems with your job? Do you even have a life than be on AN.com and throwing unjustified shade. If you have something negative to say, like I have always been told, keep it to yourself. Our life on this planet is not guaranteed, therefore, I am not feeding into the negative drama some of you do on AN.com, SERIOUSLY. Some of you may not have other obligations, and this is your only form of enjoyment, and that's cool. But to clearly post negative ingrained comments to a post that was clearly wanting verification of what was being experienced just shows how depressed you are, and the projection of anger in the wrong direction.

Now to address the specifics. @..LADY and @commu... SERIOUSLY!! The simplicity of the comment just swiftly went right over your grumpy little heads. The comparison was to the the comment of @lady saying why have a problem with something that is legal, and comparing it to another legal situation that was fought out of legitimacy. There is nothing wrong with that comparison. If people didn't think slavery was wrong, that overt physical/mental institution would be going on as of today. You simply are saying that you can't fight for what you believe in is not right! People protest laws everyday at capital Hill. Get off your grumpy-fat-high horse with that. Then you say, actually talk to someone who has been a slave? Boy you are killing me, lol.. ARE YOU SERIOUS!!! You have no idea who you are speaking to, and you think the covert institution of mental slavery is not prevalent, eventhough the overt physical aspect isn't prominent, which was less than 150 years ago! ARE YOU FREAKING SERIOUS. Do you know what that actually means @lady... Why don't you do some math, and figure the proximity in family trees that may be to some people, and also you may want to slap yourself a few couple times. You did live through the 50's and 60's right, so you do remember that! Same stuff, different day.

@commut... you haven't even assessed the situation for you to say find a different employer! Boy, I feel sorry for your patients. Assumptions out of the yazoo without proper assessments. Apparently, you weren't trying to be positive at all. I don't have a problem speaking my mind, but it is never out of jealousy or envy baby. I envy or fear no man. I do fear THE MOST HIGH, and I will not defile my temple with unclean feelings and emotions that He would not approve of, because that day is coming. And I definitely want to be on the WINNING SIDE. I came on AN.com to be a positive influential mind to others, as well as have discussions with others in a positive light. And not saying that people will have disagreements, because it is healthy to disagree, and learn to gain the skills to prove your point. Jesus did that when trying to tell the children of Israel of their transgressions, and what they are missing if they don't change their ways. But not underminning with negative undertones to have a positive outcome. I pray that everyone makes it to the Kingdom of the heavenly gates, and those that know they need to change change their ways. It is not my duty to judge at all, but live my life as a stewart of The Most High as possible.

I do not perform direct patient care (thank goodness). The less face time with patients and their families, the merrier!

In addition, one must be willing to give positivity in order to receive it. Positivity is not something to which we are automatically entitled. Good luck to you. :)
