i am no dean fan...he changes his mind and position more often than i change my clothes...i still have no idea who i will vote for, but as an independent, i certainly peruse the views of all.....here is a letter written by dean concerning bosnia...just insert iraq and the same letter applies, then of course....interesting that he is so against things now...i profess no prejudice toward any other candidate but this certainly interested me...guess it has to do with it being a campaign year and his thoughts were to a democratic president..or, perhaps the atrocities committed in iracq were somehow less important than bosnia...in his mind , anyway...

dear mr. president:

after long and careful thought, and after several years of watching the gross atrocities committed by the bosnian serbs, i have reluctantly concluded that the efforts of the united nations and nato in bosnia are a complete failure.

i think your policy up to this date has been absolutely correct. we must give, and have given, this policy with our allies and with the united nations every opportunity to work. it is evident, however, that the cost in human lives in allowing this policy to continue is too great. in addition, and perhaps more importantly for the united states, we are now in a position of ignoring, as many did in the 1940s, one of the worst crimes committed in history. if we ignore these behaviors, no matter where they occur, our moral fiber as a people becomes weakened. as the catholic church and others lost credibility during the holocaust for not speaking out, so will the united states lose credibility and our people lose confidence in themselves as moral beings if the united states does not take action.

since it is clearly no longer possible to take action in conjunction with nato and the united nations, i have reluctantly concluded that we must take unilateral action. while i completely agree with you that no ground troops should be committed for other than humanitarian purposes in bosnia, i would ask that you take the following steps in bosnia. first, lift the arms embargo as it applies to the bosnian government. second, enforce a full embargo of the sort that is now in effect in iraq on the bosnian serbs and upon yugoslavia. third, break off diplomatic relations with yugoslavia. fourth, commit american air power to support the bosnian government until the situation is stabilized and the civilian murders and atrocities by the bosnian serbs have been stopped.

i understand the risks of this policy and their implications for the nato alliance and the future success of the united nations. surely, however, as you watch and read about the huge amount of unwarranted human suffering, particularly of children, you would agree that our current course must now be changed.

i urge you to make these changes as soon as possible, and i look forward to supporting your policy fully to the best of my ability.

Siding with nurses was the right thing to do. All over the airways today was talk about his over the top behavior after the Caucus.

Time will tell.

I'm another long-time Republican that has decided that if I do not vote for Bush, I will probably vote for Kerry. I have watched his campaign closely from the day he announced his candancyin SC a few months ago.

My husband looked at me like I had lost my mind when I told him that I felt compelled to learn more on Kerry's views after his announcement. This morning, he too said he would be willing to learn more about Kerry before Novemeber. (He's an even bigger Republican supporter than I've ever been)

Not sure if you ever heard the story about a drunk hunter who shot the Alaskan pipeline which caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage due to the leak he sprung. True story.

I can't say I don't blame the people who live in Alaska to be weary of oil after that and the Valdez spill.

As for respect........I'll give Bush my respect when he EARNS it by stopping his assault on civil rights, the middle and lower classes, women, working people, the elderly, and anyone who doesn't agree with what his administration is doing.:(

Give me a break! The will of the people? Seems to me the the "people" are the ones going to the courts to overturn the antiquated laws present in most states regarding the legal rights of same-sex-marriage. Constitutional process? Based on the Declaration of Independence, Don't we the "people" have certain unalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of HAPPINESS?

"We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness --

And in the constitution..

"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. "

As defined by webster's..liberty is -

--The condition of being free from restriction or control.

--The right and power to act, believe, or express oneself in a manner of one's own choosing.

--The condition of being physically and legally free from confinement, servitude, or forced labor.

--Freedom from unjust or undue governmental control.

--A right or immunity to engage in certain actions without control or interference: the liberties protected by the Bill of Rights.

I'm sorry, do these words only apply to the wealthiest heterosexual republicans in our country? :confused: :confused: :confused:

I do not disagree with anyone who doesn't see things my way - I do not know when this post turned into a personal attack - however - I believe I said time and time again that I do not think Bush is the wonder-boy - My feeling is that He IS President at present - so i will respect him as such - I know that I never said anything about only being republican etc....or not researching other candidates to see if there views/promises are a better alternative....It is rather obvious that others cannot state their opinions on this board w/o certain individuals taking it personally....have a good day.

AT, you know where my issues come from in regard to the entire republican right! And you know sometimes I just like to argue with you. :kiss But ulitmately, I have to say that GW and the rest of the "right" are seriously threatening my liberty! Don't take these boards so personally. You love a good arguement as I do!

i have no issue w/ any of your posts ernut....i completely respect not only your views but how you articulate them...my gripe is the actual quote that i referred to in my statement (and showed at the top of my post)

i am all for healthy debating and learning...but when personal remarks begin the learning ends..and we might as well call it a day, ya know?!?!

I respect you very much, and I love reading your posts.

However, in this country which is supposed to be a democracy, Gore did win the popular vote. Kathrine Harris and those who were in colusion with her are criminals, and traitors to our constitution and our laws in my mind.

We may never "get over" an election being invalidated as it was. Nor should we.

We must prevent such a thing from ever happening again.
