Could Obamacare cause a shortage in nursing again - page 13

I would really like to know how you believe Obama care will affect the medical field and be honest. I would expect that it would create more jobs but the work would be very tiring. There would be no... Read More

8% of nurses are democrats. I thought it would have been many more than that.

80% of prison inmates are democrats. I believe that, but I was not aware they were allowed to vote.
I think it's a safe bet that most prison inmates don't give a rip and aren't either one. You have to have a certain amount of obedient civic-mindedness to call yourself either one. I happen to be neither, by deliberate choice.

I've been sort of semi-following this thread, choosing not to respond to what few posts I've made, partly because I don't really believe in our political system. As to if it will result in a shortage of nurses the true answer is "Who the **** really knows?" We will just have to wait and see. Personally I don't believe that there ever really was a so-called "nursing shortage". I think that was just concocted by schools of nursing and nursing employers with the unwitting cooperation of our news media. Nor is there likely to ever be a nursing shortage thanks to the tons of new grads being pumped out of nursing schools all over the country.

I like your statements. I have to say, and I'm sure you'd agree... that in your time and mine, we have NEVER seen such advertisements to join a field of employment like what has been portrayed in the media for nursing. You don't see Johnson and Johnson commercials for engineers or such... WHY? if not a shortage? Sooooo,,,, colleges (private pirates or public (wait list forever) are making the CASHOLA!! STUDENT LOANS are cashing in big time! It's like a circus for this demandated field to drive down the cost of nursing and lessen liability for the medical profession. Nurses are caught in the middle unless they unionize.

Reread my post. I was quoting a post above mine, and questioning those facts.

You can watch the full video of all 17 bipartisan hearings on the ACA here. The full text of the ACA was actually released 3 months before the Senate voted on it and 6 months before the House voted on it. As per Republican wishes, healthcare is still run by, and provided by, private entities, the government was not given the ability to dictate healthcare. You might watch too much Fox News.
Oh? Why then, is the government mandating EVERYONE buy insurance or pay a penalty? (FINE)? Is that not dictating my healthcare? I don't need maternity coverage or birth control. Why do I need to pay for something I DON'T need? Because, I am paying for those who DO need it, even though I don't. I don't want to sign up for Obamacare. I want to keep the coverage I already have, at the price I pay now....but I can't. As of January, I will no longer have coverage because what worked for me is no longer good enough. Signing up for Obamacare will increase my rates to $1200 a month for a 10K yearly deductible. I don't even use a 5K deductible a year! But, hey, I qualify for a subsidy which means someone else is paying for me! No lifetime limits? Great! Cover pre-existing conditions? Wonderful!! BUT...

What happens to the folks who STILL can't get insurance? Why are policies being cancelled for some and not for others? The ACA was good in theory, but not everyone will have, or get, health insurance....and they will be punished for not doing so. Politics aside, someone answer that question....with a fairly reasonable answer.

Policies that are being cancelled are policies from insurance companies-they have decided to cancel the policy, NOT the ACA:

*** You (we) should contribute to pay for those things that others need because YOU (all of us) benefit from it.
To me this is like saying you don't want the taxes you pay on gas to benefit driver on the other side of the state because you don't drive on roads on the other side of the state. Or the empty nesters complaining about local school taxes. Why should they pay to maintain the local schools when their children don't need a school anymore? The simple answer for both is because we all pay our part for the things that benefit us.

That's dictating your minimum required insurance coverage, not dictating your healthcare. The government isn't going to dictate how you treat your hypertension or whether or not you should have your hip replaced. (Although maybe they should).

It's no different that requiring people to buy car insurance if they are going to drive a car; By driving a car you have the potential to incur significant costs and as a result you need to make sure you have the ability to cover those costs. The same is true of healthcare, but unlike driving a car you can't avoid the potential to incur costs by not driving, your risk of accumulating significant healthcare costs exists by merely being alive, in which case you need to cover your share of the burden.

Aside from the fact that paying for both of these actually saves everyone money in the end, that's what insurance is; you pay for the problems other people have and in exchange they pay for yours.
I do think there should be an option for people such as yourself; you can pay all the costs associated with lack of maternity coverage and birth control, and I'll pay for maternity coverage and birth control.

The plans that are being cancelled are the ones that didn't meet the basic requirements to be called health insurance, typically because they were so full of loopholes that they wouldn't actually cover you if you needed it, leaving your cost to the rest of us to pay. Closing those loopholes means insurance companies have to provide you with legitimate insurance coverage, which costs more than fake insurance coverage. A large portion of this comes from the pre-existing coverage mandate, should we get rid of that?

A $10,000 deductible is typical of a Bronze plan, which ranges from as low as $125 a month to has high as $425 a month (before a subsidy is applied).

If you had a plan that is being cancelled and replaced with a new plan, it's because someone else was paying for you (their insurance was carrying your risk more than your insurance was), if you're opposed to that idea then you would seem to support the ACA.

Some policies are being cancelled and not others because some policies met the minimum requirements for insurance, and other don't.

The ACA subsidy goes up to 400% of poverty, which for a family of four making less than $94,000 a year gets a subsidy, which seems pretty generous to me, the subsidy limit could be even higher, but as you pointed out earlier that just means someone else will pay more. If someone can't afford even the lowest premiums with the subsidies, then they qualify for medicaid.
