post hire medical exam

I'm 50 years old and was diagnosed with cirrhosis 5 years ago. Since that time I have quit drinking, eat healthy, exercise regularly, I have no symptoms, and recently graduated from college.

I was offered a job at a local hospital and will be going through a post hire medical exam tomorrow morning. I want to be honest about my medical condition and I don't need any accommodations to do the job - but I'm worried that my condition will have a negative effect on their decision to hire me and they will rescind the job offer. Do I have to disclose this information and how much information am I required to provide. I'm really uncomfortable sharing this information with anyone.

Any suggestions?

You are not legally required to disclose and I suggest you don't.

:no:Do NOT discose anything you don't have to. If you can do the job you were hired for, then they don't need to know.

They may not take the offer back, but they may find another way to get rid of you.

Employers are not concerned about you. They are concerned about their insurance premiums, liability, etc.

The fact that they require a medical exam tells me they want only the healthiest of employees.

Employers like this tend to "weed out" certain people. They can fire for any reason up until the 90 day probation period ends, for any reason. They will not come out and say it's because of your chronic illness, or your previous drinking...

If you read back posts on this forum, you'll get the idea

I wish you well :nurse:

Thank You so much for responding to my post. I read through some other posts - I'm new to this website and it's very helpful. They didn't actually say I would be having a medical exam - I actually assumed it because I'm freaking out thinking I would have to disclose my medical condition. They told me to report to the employee health dept. and bring my ID, shot records and I would be getting a TB test - after looking at the other posts maybe that's all they will be do. If I have to fill out a history - how should I answer the question - do you have any other medical conditions or disability not covered by the above?

I have to be at the hospital at 10:00 - I'm getting nervous :)

I just wanted you to know that all I had to do was answer a basic health questionnaire (cirrhosis wasn't listed), they gave me a TB test, checked my vision, drew blood work (I didn't have my shot records), the NP did all the work. I filled out the necessary paperwork for HR. Now, I'm wondering what they are looking for in the blood work.

When ever I get blood work done I ask what its for. But most likely it is for titers for Measles mumps rubella, and varicella.
