I'm sure you've all seen them. Those patients who think they are at the country club. Not only does their make-up have to be perfect and every hair in place, but they also expect a designer gown with matching robe and slippers. What are some of the most ridiculous requests you have had from fashionistas?

When I was working in one of New York's plush hospital, a well-to-do woman came in with ridiculous requests: make-up artist for her makeup during labor, requests for specially made gourmet foods; her own private nurse, doula and midwife, satin pink sheets, extra bed for her husband and her dog. The final straw was that her choice for infant feeding is breast milk, but the patient did not want to breastfeed from her breasts so she purchased breastmilk from the breastmilk bank.

Funny yes, but my real concern is with the fashionista/prima donna nurses I work with! Ugh! How can you engage in "hands on work" when your so concerned with your nails and fashion scrubs and jewelry for science sske!...sorry...off the jocularity of the post.

Doctor's wife (who happened to be an RN) put a full face of make up on the morning of surgery. I guess the no make up, no jewelry thing wasn't meant for her.:cheeky:

I think its disgusting that some PTB actually think nurses need to jump at every one of her requests! I donated over 8000 ounces of breastmilk to milkbanks with my last two babies. I certainly did not do it with people like her in mind!!

Ok. I lost wt before my surgery so I wouldn't have all that fat hanging out when I was naked and unconscious on the table. LOL.

When I had my first baby, as soon as I got back to my room after I delivered I was IN THE SHOWER washing my hair and getting cleaned up. The nurse acted like she was shocked since I had been laboring for 26 hours but I didn't care, I wanted to be CLEAN! I was like 'take out this catheter right now!' LOL. I found it embarrassing and I didn't want anyone to see me in that state no matter who they were. Added to the fact that I was a nurse I found it difficult to be anything but the perfect patient doing as much for myself as I possibly could. I think when you are a patient you feel a sense of loss of control over your own body. People compensate in many ways. Wanting to take care of yourself and be clean, presentable when everyone wants to come visit and fawn over the baby… or WHATEVER… putting on make up does make you feel better. The better you feel the faster you get well. imo. I think it is a good and healthy sign.
