by SmilingBluEyes Sep 29, '12This Old Stethoscope of Mine....
It's heard the beat of new life at its start...
The beating of a newborn heart...
It's seen the twinkle in the eye of a new parent's tear when the baby first cried...
It's seen life's struggle and the pain....
It's heard the heart tick away as the life of a loved one did begin to wane....
it's heard the beat of a tired heart....
When the life of a human being is to depart....
It's heard the heart of one who struggles with disease's ills...
The beating heart of a person who wills.....to live a little longer on this Earth....
There's simply no way to measure this old stethoscope's worth....
Telling stories that have no real beginning nor end....
It tells when life's blood is about to wend....away
Or begin anew, strong again for the fight.....
This old stethoscope of mine...
Tells such stories...
Life's glories...
Life's worries....
Hearts a-flurry....
It tells me what I need to know...
the tales for whom the life's bell is about to tow....
It's faithful, true and on the mark....
This old stethoscope, why, it has a HEART!

- Oct 1, '12 by toekneejoI'm posting just to keep an eye on this. I am very new to this site and don't know how to find anything (once I leave a page) if I don't post on it! I do appreciate the poem. Sometimes I believe the hustle and bustle we all feel is the main cause of burn out, we can blame any and all of the facets of nursing but I think it is just that we get so caught up with it all that we lose sight of the emotions and the true meaning of Nursing. Poetry has a way to keep me grounded---So thank you!
