There's a high demand in nurses. Everyone wants to become one!

Do you think this is part of the economic recession and people just needing a job that is in high demand? Or, do you think people are genuinely interested in becoming a nurse, helping others, caring for others?

Just a comment regarding the nursing shortage, I am currently in nursing school and have been able to work "On Call" for numerous staffing agencies throughout the years...we constantly get needs from all over the country for MS/ICU/NICU/CCU/ER that we can not fill, we have so many open orders.....this nursing shortage is what keeps the staffing agencies in business and what has allowed me to stay home with my children, work from home at night and attend nursing school full time during the day.....I am looking forward to becoming an RN, truly care and fully aware of the need for experienced quality staff...

Good question! I think it's a bit of both actually..from personal experience I've came across nursing students who are doing it for the money & benefits and some are in it because they love to be caring, assertive, passionate, and all the other qualities that nurses must be instilled with. As for me, personally, I'm doing it because I have the qualities of a nurse:)

I constantly hear this. I'm trying to figure out what other health care professionals (not vocational) in hospitals do you consider not be "caring, assertive, and passionate" ?

Those are just qualities of nursing I pointed out however, it may also fit under all other health career jobs as well. I know that there is HUGE demand of physical therapists and Registered Massage Therapists...well at least where I live. It's in so much demand that were is competition between companies over those who apply for a job...I went to my physio and he said it is so hard to hire a person because they are looking for a certain individual. One that isn't arrogant and actually considers the patients need, is their advocate, is caring and polite. He's been in the business for 15 years....so in any health career job that you willingly pursue you must remember you are dealing with patients so it is most certainly relevant to have these necessitous qualities. For instance, if there are rude physio therapists dealing with a patient, I highly and strongly doubt that they'd ever go back to give them business again. Same goes for nurses for example, if you are rude and don't take into account of the patient's needs, you're going to have a bad reputation as well as complaints from patients.

That's why it is so important that any health care professionals exceed in these definite qualities. This is just my opinion.

Wait, I thought the nursing shortage was a myth. Is the myth over and the shortage here?

*** Not a myth. False, self-serving propaganda put out by those who stand to gain financialy from a glut of nurses.

*** An abundance of open positions in no way indicates a shortage of nurses. It may well indicate poor working conditions, low pay, or abundant oppertunities for people with nurses skills and critical thinking.

Even during times when there were many, many open staff nurse positions there were still plenty of nurses around. It's just that many choose not to submit themselves to the working conditions being offered for the compensation offered.

No disrespect intended- but you too will be considered one of those new grads who can not attain your first nursing position.

I assume you are clerical staff not a licensed nurse and you did state you are' filling orders' for those positions. Experienced nurses who have not been at the acute care bedside for 2 years can't fill those open positions you mentioned- I've been in M/S tele for the past 30 years as an RN but have not been doing acute care bedside for 2 years and I can't fill those M/S positions. There are very experienced RN's out there, many of them who are very qualified to fill those positions but the hospitals have locked those positions- 'recent experience', Their criteria is: "within the past 2 years!!" That eliminates any RN with experience who has not been in one of those positions in the past 2 years and any new grad. The hospitals don't want those positions filled!!

I'd be interested to see you findings of how many positions are being filled with new graduate, inexperienced nurses.

Oh you'd be surprised of how many new grads are getting hired, well at least where I live and of course new graduate nurses would be "inexperienced" it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out. That's why they get hired ...to get experience and grow. That goes for any jobs out there. No grads who are fresh out of University will have the experience instilled with them already for their jobs..it takes time and dedication. Besides, what's with the negative remark? It seems like you've been having no luck.

Would I? Surprise me.

Yup and hey, you've completed nursing school, am I correct? If yes, then I think you are capable and educated enough to do the research yourself :) I mean you already know how to post sensless comments on threads that are of little value.

You're the one claiming to know, so share the wealth! If not, your vague, anecdotal information is of absolutely no use to me, but thanks. I was speaking to someone who might actually have a frame of reference for their knowledge.
