giving up vrp?

Nurses Recovery

Published

 just wondering if anyone has changed their minds during vrp participation with pnap and what happens to your license? any recommended sources for information on this topic?

i have been going along with all requirements of my contract but now feel the financial portion is crushing. i have not been given the okay to return to work and risk losing medical coverage that is helping cover counseling fees, not to mention the out of pocket expenses of random drug testing with no income. it has been since Nov 18,2010 that i was prohibited from practicing related to a dui i received in 2009.

i only find relief knowing i am not the only one in this same situation. just bewildered as to how this got so messed up. my first question to my attorney was "what happens to my license" he is so ignorant as to what really does happen to a nurse with a dui. i really only have myself to blame for my lack of better judgment in getting a dui in the first place. i just dont think its worth all this hardship. any help would be appreciated.

An attorney will make all the difference! The BON/state will jerk you around but not so much if you have an attorney. I didn't get one and it was a HUGE mistake. The job market stinks and with any marks on your license it's really difficult. It's worth the attorney fees.

You are soooooo right. I attended the Indiana board of nursing meeting yesterday. Out of about 30 cases, a couple had an attorney with them. HUGE difference in the way they address the nurse with representation than those without. That's not true in every case. A couple off nurses did very well alone (they were the exception). I don't think they are even aware of the difference in the way they speak with those with and without representation. In defense of the board members, several of the nurses representing themselves didn't didn't help their case. They showed up in jeans, tennis shoes, and T-Shirts. A couple of the nurses could have used an attitude adjustment. I guarantee being snippy with the folks holding your license in their hands isn't the best strategy for getting the best outcome possible.

well i havent really had much success with finding out further information if i were to surrender my license. i did contact a nurse attorney who really couldn't advise me of what actions would be taken if i did decline from participation in vrp with pnap. i am still meeting my requirements of the program however.

my next question is will i be prevented from obtaining another license in my state if i am place on the exclusions list(other than the medical field). i realize it will be a long time before i can return to work as a nurse. so, school may be a good idea but seems everything i would even be interested in will need a state license. thinking of calling the board of occupational affairs to see if they can provide any information.

any input will be appreciated.
