Nurses Recovery

Published

ok, folks- i completed TPAPN in november. have been working in dialysis for that 2 years. the job is brutal- long hours, on your feet all day (& i am old!!), constant turnover- leading to always working overtime, less than stellar management... anyway, there is an opening on the psych unit- i want to apply for the job. do i, would you- disclose that i'm an alcoholic/addict? obviously, it's not going to be required, since i'm no longer being monitored- but it does explain why i would like to work on the psych unit, & why i think i would be good at it. what do ya'll think??

Specializes in u name it.

ohh man, texasrn2..that's a tough one.. Is the psych unit a CD unit??..If so...I would say yes. I mean you accomplished a huge thing when you completed Texas peer review and it's many stumbling blocks and that is a beacon to those who have not yet seen the light....but if it is straight, no cd psych..I am not sure I would disclose.

You could always say that you are invested in always expanding your knowledge base and skill set..which of course is true for all nurses. I say go for it and your heart will tell you at the right moment if disclosing is a good thing..Can't wait to hear..Hey..can I have your old dialysis job?? LOL :yeah::nurse::yeah:

Hi TXRN2, Congrats on completed the program that is quite an accomplishment and also on your sobriety! You are an inspiration to me and others in this forum an in life! If I were interviewing for the position I dont think I would disclose your addiction to anyone at this point. The monitoring is done so dont give out anymore info than needed. The stigma associated with addiction is still out there. Prove yourself as a nurse first then in time if you want to disclose your background at least they will know you and your capabilities without prejudging! Good luck let us know how the interview went.:)

No I would not Just saying
