Post-Hurricane Ike in Houston

Thanks Paul! Mine came on today at 12:30 and then shut off again and is now back on. Hopefully it stays this time!!!! I hope everyone else is doing alright as well.

im an hour north of houston, and our power came on last night. did anybody have any serious damage? best of wishes to everyone!

Mine came back on Friday.Our hospital sustained damage, so we are closed for now.We will be working at a sister hospital.

This is day 9 without power for me. I alternate between periods of calm, hysterical laughing and crying. We're supposed to have power back tomorrow according to the estimates and let me tell you, it can not get here soon enough! Fortunately we didn't sustain any major damage---lots of tree limbs and a downed fence, so I'm very lucky in that regard.

I've been so desperate for an internet fix that I'm running my modem off my car battery via an inverter.

Its really amazing to see all of the kids and families out riding their bikes and taking walks. What did kids ever do without playstations and xbox???

Still no power for me - I'm in Spring Branch and we had a lot of tree damage which played havoc on the power lines & poles. Projected date for restoration was today, so I am hopeful.

Thankfully, I only had minor house damage - nothing big enough to let in the rain & wind. In the meantime, our street is slowly coming back to normal - each house hiding behind enormous stacks of limbs and brush at the curb. I have worked out a complex 'generator management' arrangement with my neighbors, so I can even come to work without worry. My shift starts at 3, and I have to bring more gas.

My own "after action" review has resulted in modifications to my longstanding hurricane plan. For one thing, I have added another item to my "three Houston essentials" (gas grill, chain saw & generator) list -- my Sprint aircard! With it, I was able to maintain Internet connectivity throughout this huge mess. Even though I didn't need them this time, I am purchasing sufficient blue tarps to cover my roof & keept them in my hurricane supply.... my neighbor had a terrible time finding one to cover his shingle damage.

What 'new items' is everyone else adding to their hurricane kits?

i am going to wait until winter when all those gererators that didn't sell will be marked down and grab me one..you wouldn't believe the food that was tossed and a generator may not run central air but it should run a small window unit and allow you to sleep in comfort

Good idea on the post-hurricane generator!

Be sure to pay attention to the total wattage and gas tank size/configuration. Mine is a 6500 watt model, and it runs my fridge, window unit ac, tv, washer, various fans, etc. without a problem. I even 'share' with neighbors to run their tv and fridge for part of the day. I paid $499 for this one - but it was a few years ago.

Be sure to get one with a non-metal gas tank or you'll have to replace it in a few years. I like having the gas tank on top of the unit - easy to fill. Wheels are also a 'must' - these things are heavy!!!

My secret desire? a 15,000 watt 'hummer' of a generator... it's about $1200, but it would be enough to power my whole house!!! A girl can dream.

We didn't have any damage either and only lost power at our house for about 6 hrs. For the house I would like to invest in a generator. A battery operated fan would be nice.

For my personal kit, I am planning on buying a huge suitcase!! Going to the lock down at the hospital I had all my essentials: air mattress & pump, battery operated tv (although after Feb it won't work anymore), toiletries, enough clothes and scrubs for three days. However, I had too many bags to haul in. Next time I want just to drag in ONE large bag.

Relatives in Tomball. How was it there. We heard they got a generator and then nothing. Anybody know how things are there?
