I know that there are a few states that do want their own monitoring done, even when already completed elsehwere... I suspect that they don't want to assume liability based on other states programs. and the fact that the media has uncovered some states that don't do a good job does not help here.
I completed a 5 year monitoring program in 2006, sober since 2001, and am currently seeking reinstatement in my original state of licensing d/t letting my license lapse. Could you tell me what states that you know of that require their own monitoring after successful completion of the program?

This question is best when asked directly to the state boards of the states that you would consider moving to.

yes, they endorsed it. however i have to enroll in their monitoring program because I did not finish the program in my original home state ( I happened to relocate while being a participant in the program). I think if you finish a program somewhere it would be ridiculous and unfair that someone would have to start a program from start in the state that they are trying to get their license endorsed to. But i'm not sure how it works. I did not pose that question to the board because again I didn't get to complete my program in my home state so it is only fair that I of course continue it where I relocated. sorry if this was not any help..

if you're in a monitoring program, typically the new state will have you do their program. Studies show 5 years decreases significantly the incidence of relapse. Once you've completed, then you're done (usually). You certainly can apply for endorsement but the new state will contact the old one to match notes then it's up to the new state to decide. States in my region will not discharg you but keep monitoring you out of state since some are mandated to monitor to completion or noncompliance. So you're monitored in one state, apply for licensure in another and you added another UDS. You can coordinate both programs signing releases for them to communicate and see if you can do one UDS with results sent to both BON's or one will bow out and let the other state control it as long as you're overall compliant with both programs which what you're doing. I'd suggest calling the BON and they'll help you out. They have questions like this often. They're not your enemy

Traveler,

I know that FL is one for sure, and have read of a nurse who tried to get licensed in NJ and was told she would need to be evaluated and monitored. I think that she had just recently completed monitoring in the other state...

While I do always remind people that all states are unique as far as their regulations and no state handles discipline or licensing the same,,, and it is also a fact that within any state, they have the ability to handle each case differently.

Yes, I agree that you need to seek answers from the specific state board, but in reality, you won't be given a clear response. I have spent a lot of time reading specific state regs, and never have seen where there exists a detailed or specific answer to your question... it is common for the wording to be vague and discuss in very gneberal terms the procedure for licensing when there has been BON intervention is another state.

It may be useful to review that states disciplinary actions from previous meetings to see if this has been addressed by other nurses. Seeking advice from an experienced administration lawyer would be your best way to find out but make sure that s/he has represented nurses and has in depth knowledgable about the BON
