Work experience for NCLEX

World Registration

Published

Hello everyone,

I'm so thankful that there's a site like this that helps me and other nurses get information (and answers) regarding nursing-related questions. I'm currently residing in the Philippines, graduated BSN, passed the local board exam and working as an RN for a local hospital. I have about 3 years worth of experience and counting. I'm hoping by early next year (2015), my petition to be a permanent resident becomes a reality. My first goal is to take on NCLEX but I'm hearing stories how difficult it is to qualify if educated outside of the U.S.

My question is, would my experience being a nurse plus education qualify me to be allowed to take the NCLEX exam?

Thanks and hopefully someone could shed some light.

A lot will depend on the state you apply to and where you plan on living and working

check out the website for the board of nursing where you plan on moving. All states have their own requirements. Good luck

@silverdragon102- Sorry but I couldn't find Nurse Registration Forum from the main page. Do you have a link? Thanks

@krisiepoo- I'm planning to migrate to Southern California and start my life there. I visited the site Board of Registered Nursing - Applicant Frequently Asked Questions but majority of the information to get qualified are not detailed. They have links but doesn't say anything if I qualify taking NCLEX in California with such work experience and with valid Philippines license.

Work experience does not count for licensing as an RN in CA. Your credentials that qualified you for initial licensing as an RN are assessed the same whether you apply as an IEN for licensing by examination or endorsement. ALL of your theory, clinical, and cases (surgical assist, cord care etc) must have been completed concurrently within the same semester not in a subsequent semester or post graduation. Cases completed post graduation or in the next semester are grounds for denial based upon the concurrency regulations You would be required to complete deficient coursework in whichever area deemed deficient by the BRN (psych, pedi, OB/maternity, med-surg) at your own time & expense within 3 years of submitting your application. (Wait lists for make up classes are expensive and current cost per course available is reported to be $10,000-$15,000 per class)

Work experience is irrelevant. For example if you were licensed in NY worked for 5 years in med-surg then attempted to endorse to CA but your clinical/theory/cases in school were not concurrent you would still be denied and required to return to school to complete med-surg clinical & theory.

If you graduated in 2004 or before, then you might have a better chance to get pass thru the CA BRN enforcement of the concurrency rules. Otherwise, just know that since Nov. 2011, very very few of any PH applicants have gotten the ATT or even those trying to endorse into CA since Nov. 2011. Being a US citizen or dual citizen or having a green card doesn't matter, it's all educational background based.

By the way, you are in the "Nurse Registration" forum section.

To summarize the current situation for PH nurses or PH grads (even for many other international applicants), here's what's going on with the nursing outlook today: https://allnurses.com/international-nursing/end-phillipine-nursing-885162.html
