Philippine RN looking for a job in California.

World Registration

Hi I am a BSN graduate and a registered nurse in the Philippines. I just came here in California and looking for a job right now. What type of jobs can I apply for if I don't have any licenses yet in California? What positions and what are the rates that I should expect? I really don't know where to start. I'm hoping for responses on this post.Thank you!

Specializes in Ante-Intra-Postpartum, Post Gyne.

I hate to sound harsh, but good luck. American nurses that already have their license are having a hard enough time as it is, I have not heard of anyone being hired with a provisional in many years. Your best bet is to get your license first, and even apply to other states all together. California is really bad right now as far as nursing jobs and I have seen posts lately from foreign nurses being rejected from the California BRN.

It's okay. Thank u though.. Do you know possible reasons why foreign nurses are being rejected by CA BRN?

Specializes in Medical Surgical.

Because there are already too many unemployed RN in California that live here all there life? Just a wild guess.

There are a bunch of threads here about this. The CA BRN has started strictly enforcing rules that have been "on the books" for many years about the specific curriculum requirements necessary to be eligible for CA licensure (probably because there are so many RNs in CA already, and so many nurse from other countries wanting to come to CA). Many people applying recently with education in the PI have been rejected because of their nursing education has been found to not be in compliance with the CA BRN's requirements to be considered equivalent to nursing education in CA.

Moved to the Advice on immigration forumUntil you have your license you cannot work as a nurse although there may be some jobs however many foreign trained nurses are not meeting CA RN requirements and either going for LVN or moving to another state. Suggest a good read on the threads discussing this

Specializes in Vents, Telemetry, Home Care, Home infusion.

a. First concern: What is your immigration status as that affects employment.

Legitimate employers are required to know and document your Immigration I9 status on date of hire.

Those here on vacation tourist visa unable to work. Student status: have limited # hours permitted work.

If you have a work visa, then eligilbe for employment.

b. Minimal work available in California hospitals due to tight economy, surplus of new graduate nurses and decrease in #patients /hospitalization rates. Positions for LPN + RN require passing licensing exam and Board of Nursing approval while certified nursing assistants require passage certification exam.

c. You probably have the best chance of being hired in an assisted living facility, group home or private duty home care agency as a personal care assistant since no certificate is required.

Nursing students and internationally educated nurses can obtain Certified Home Health Aide/Certified Nursing Assistant certification without additional coursework

Other healthcare positions to consider: Telemetry monitor technician, unit clerk, medical record technician,

hemodialysis technician (training and certificate required), private duty companions, medical records coder.

You might as well apply for the CA exam, just know that any fees submitted to the CA BON is "non-refundable". That's the chance you must take. But as others have mentioned, CA BON has been rejecting the PH applications fairly quickly due to the issues mentioned above.

Your other options are apply into states not yet affected by the concurrency issues, take the deficient courses in CA at another college or school (but know you're competing for 1-2-3 spots out of almost 1,000 plus other foreign students) or become an LVN in CA.

Hi guys I just wanted to clarify something....whenever you send the downloaded copy of request for transcript and the breakdown of school record form to your school, is it automatic that the school will also send or include the copy of your cases and all other requirements to he brn in california?or should it be a different request? Before you go thru all these steps, do you have a valid SSN as you'll need one to apply. If you do have a SSN, carry on.

Check out indeed.com they are recruiting for travel and per diem nurses in CA, lots of positions to fill
