Philippine Graduate; Ineligible for Ca NCLEX-RN-- Other options??

Hey Everyone!

Along with many other foreign-graduated nurses, I was deemed ineligible to take the NCLEX exam for the state of california :( You could only imagine my disappointment and frustration after i opened that letter. I tried looking into applying for Nevada instead but saw a recent post about Nevada having more requirements as well :/ I feel as if i'm not really sure as what I should do. I'll be moving to California in a week, in hopes of looking for a school there that I might be able to enroll in, but I just want if anyone has any other suggestions out there?

I was also looking into taking the LVN exam as well-- has there been anyone in the same situation who applied for the NCLEX-pn exam and got their ATT? If so, please share the process and experience! :)

Also, any suggestions about any other states i could try applying for? Perhaps, for one that isn't as strict? I have this fear that soon enough all the states will be adapting California's attitude with foreign-graduated nurses :/

Yes, you can become eligible to take the LVN exam in CA, then, try to enroll in a couple of CA schools to make up the deficiencies to then become eligible to take the NCLEX-RN exam, it is not easy and is costly, but not impossible. Read on as there are a few new threads on this. There are several PH grads who were in your situation recently and have gotten their ATT for the NCLEX-PN, there are several threads on this read on.

Mount St. Mary College and National University in CA are two schools, but understand it's about $7,000 in tuition, must be paid up in advance, add a couple of $1,000 for books and supplies and you need to pass several tests and exams, have letters of recommendations, have health insurance, possess a CA driver's license and a few items to be eligible to enroll. I'm not sure, but I would imagine there could a wait list or if not, there's a time limit as to when they start the actual courses, read on other threads on it in specific.

BUT.....

Kabayans, you have to look at the "bigger picture".

To everyone asking of the same question: just pick whatever state you wish to work in for the next 3-8 years or more.

-- First and foremost, you must now have a valid SSN to apply into CA and into most states and one day soon, ALL states will require a SSN and for future renewals. There are zero to a handful of hospital sponsorships in the whole country now, don't count on those, you will have better luck winning the lottery odds.

-- It makes NO sense to get a license in one state, when you really WANT to work in another, as you need to still PASS that state's requirements you wanted to work in the FIRST place.

-- You will be spending more MONEY by hopping around one state to another in extra fee$ and possible extra money for certain testing$ and wasting more months waiting and waiting, instead of looking for a job. Why pay double $$$ ??

**** The FASTEST, the EASIEST, the CHEAPEST state to apply into is the State you feel you will put your roots down for many years, the MINUTE you pass the NCLEX! If that state doesn't meet their requirements AND your needs and desires (weather, salary, etc) now then move on and research and travel to that state if you can. ****

-- Avoid the 14-15 states that are enforcing the concurrency now, The list of them are mentioned a few times on this forum. Here you go: https://allnurses.com/nurse-registration/13-states-same-760249.html

-- Forget about trying to ENDORSE-TRANSFER any out-of-state license into CA or ANY of the current mentioned 14-15 other states that are enforcing the concurrency rules, it's NOT going to happen as again, you MUST submit the same college transcripts that already DENIED or will DENY the application, there's no way around to go around this! It doesn't matter if you have 2 years or more of US RN experience, my PH friend tried to endorse her FL into CA and was denied the licensure, citing the same concurrency issue. Same thing with our friend with her NY license, same bad fate.

-- As you may know or should know, that jobs for us international students are becoming very hard and pretty difficult to get our foor thru the door, as many hospitals even many clinics are hiring their own students that did their clinical time in that hospital or hiring more of that local students or those from the same State. It's known as hiring the "internals".

-- To find out what state you are interested in, the bottom of each page is the list of BON's and you can easily Google...STATE's name followed by "board of nursing"....BINGO! It's all there for the state's requirements, including every one of the Board's has a special ""INTERNATIONAL"" section.

Hello,

I'm sorry about what happened.I had the same feeling when I got my letter from the RN board.I felt so hopeless and disappointed but my family encouraged me not to lose hope instead look for some options. My first option was to apply LVN to start a new beginning.I sent my application on march 17,requested the RN board to transfer a

Copy of my school documents to the BVN,paid $30 and waited 2 months to get a response from them. Then I received a declaration form, fill it out and sent it back.I've waited another 2 months before I got my eligibility letter.

Keep your hopes up!Good luck and God bless:)

Thank you steppybay for your well thought out answer, esp. the link to all the states that are adapting the whole concurrency issue, it's a bit discouraging to know that a lot of us foreign graduates will have a harder time trying to gain eligibilty to sit for the exam, as well as get jobs in the case that we do take and pass the exam :/

hello dragon_lady!

Are you taking the exam for Cali? I've really been putting thought into taking the LVN exam as of late, but whenever I go to the site and check out the application form (method #3) i get kinda confused :/ like with the employment verification whatever form, this may be a dumb question, but who do i give that to, to fill out?

Do i just call the BON and talk to one of the operators and ask them to just transfer my documents to the BVN? will i have to re-do the fingerprint cards? Sorry for all the questions :o

Thank you and God Bless as well :3

Hi, yea, it's tough goings for us.

Have you guys looked into the actual State's forum? Forget about reading the International forums for a bit.

It's crazy to see that even the US educated students and grads in just about every State in the Union are having problems finding a new grad job, many submitting hundreds of applications and only a few ever getting a personal interview, much less a real job offer. Some going over a year or two and no offers, some going back to work in their old non-nursing jobs or working in other new non-nursing jobs to pay bills and eat and survive, scary for sure.

Have you taken the exam yet?

Yes I'm taking Ca LPN exam.Regarding your application, fill out method 3,application form, record of nursing program, record of conviction form, new set of live scan.Forget about the experience or employment verification form.Enclose the copy of both high school and college diploma and the $150 fee.

About the transfer of school documents,mAke a written request, put your file number on it,put your signature, and the $30 fee.I heard someone here who didn't pay for it.,Ask your analyst first if he/she can transfer your documents free of charge:)

Have you taken the exam yet?

I already paid the exam but no schedule yet:)

hello belagee12,

sorry to hear about your application . i had the same feeling like 3 weeks ago. the first thing i did was check in the internet what was the RN concurrency issue, and it lead me into this forum. :) just try to browse some more about which category youll gonna fall and then follow their advices. these guys here are very helpful and nice.

I called the BON yesterday and i told them my situation that i cannot take the make up class and then they will give you the advice that take the LVN-RN route,i ask them about my documents, they said that they can transfer it but ill have to make a request and have to pay. right now im trying to complete my requirements for the LVN and hopefully it will work just fine... ;)

Just like what was dragon_lady says "Keep up our hopes, God Bless and Good luck" for all of us!

Congrats on getting your ATT for the LPN exam! :D

Should i inquire for the transfer of my documents and wait for them to be transferred first before filling out my application for the LVN exam? Yes, i think i read that in a different thread, her analyst didnt charge her for it :)

did you graduate batch 2012?

I'm sorry about yours as well, same thing happened to me-- got my letter of ineligibility, researched it, and my web browsing lead me to this great site :) A lot of people can share their experiences, give their support as well as some well-thought advice and facts.

We should all keep pushing for our dreams, this is just a bump in the road, we just need to keep going!
