Nevada NCLEX (New) Requirement Physical Assessment Course for Foreign Graduates

World Registration

Published

hello, although i come here often, i'm not a very active poster because i saw how bad some arguments end up. but i felt this information was very important to share with all of you. i am a bsn graduate from the philippines and i recently applied for the nclex-rn in nevada. yesterday, i received a letter from their bon stating my application is "denied with an educational option". based on my ces report, they are requiring me to complete a physical assessment course at a board approved nursing program in the us with a grade of "c" or higher. and once i send them the transcripts/documentation showing completion, i will be allowed to take the test.

this came to a surprise to me because i have relatives and friends who are also bsn graduates from the philippines and didn't have this problem. and the most recent ones that applied were around 2009-2010. they are already licensed and working. their curriculum was almost identical with mine wherein physical assessment was integrated into the rle (related learning experience) and fundamentals of nursing practice subject (most especially throughout my second year). maybe it should have been clarified in my ces report. but i highly believe this is a newly mandated and/or they are becoming more strict. either way, i am more than willing to comply with it. i'm aware that in most if not all us nursing programs have physical assessment as a separate course.

this may not be a problem for all foreign graduates who took physical assessment as a separate subject. in the philippines though, when i graduated two years ago, i believe most nursing programs didn't have it separated. but after i left, i know that in my school, and perhaps others, they made changes in the curriculum possibly making it a separate subject. so recent graduates may not have to encounter this same problem.

i consulted my aunt regarding this since she is active in the nursing education system. she holds a doctorate in nursing and is currently teaching in the masters program in her school in new jersey. apparently, this physical assessment course requirement has also been recently mandated in the new jersey board of nursing. and in her school, foreign graduates applying for the nclex go there to complete that requirement. only difference though in their state, they just need to show a certification for that course, there is no grade. i believe this requirement is relatively new.. possibly for all states or eventually will be for all states regarding foreign nursing graduates... or maybe just those with a ces report? but anyways my main point of this post is to ask:

do any of you know of a school where i can take just this physical assessment course? preferably in southern california or the nevada area. if there are approved online courses, that would help very much as well.

has anyone received the same requirement?

do you think this will be an additional requirement for the ca bon for foreign nurses?

to give a background, i am a us citizen, born and raised in ca, but took my tertiary education in the philippines. like many of you, i encountered the concurrency problem when i tried to apply for the nclex in ca. and it broke my heart because i am from here and my family lives here. but my mother's advise, who is also a nurse, was to just apply to nevada and eventually fulfill the requirements of ca (since no one has actually succeeded in doing that just yet). the completing of a physical assessment course seems more possible so i guess it's not so bad. but it does suck how it becomes more and more difficult. i'd also like to know:

are there any updates regarding a school in ca where we can complete our ob and med-surgical requirements for the ca bon?

since it is so hard to find a ca school that accepts foreign grads wanting to only take two subjects, will the ca bon allow us to complete the requirements in other us state schools?

do any of you know if holding a master's degree in nursing in another state will qualify the foreign graduate to be licensed in ca? i think it was mentioned before but i'd like to clarify this if it's true or not.

i actually have a lot to say regarding the concurrency problem in ca. but maybe i'll save it for later, since i don't want to stray too far away from the main topic.

Hello guys again.. There's a lot of posts already and I don't know which to answer first. so, prioritization.. hehe..

Jinxedmix, to sum it up, I think I also have the same content or summary with you and Daisy's CES report. But since your problem pertains to the Physical Assessment course, I just ctrl F the word physical assessment on the pdf file of my applicant copy, then poof I have 18 theory hours of that subject area.

Daisy, pls add me up too, and also kuya fern.

Now, Daisy, I took my Toefl last aaah... ok this was my timeline-like thingy

Thanks for the info konoha! :D Do you know if the subjects "Acute-care Nursing", and "Long-term Care", were part of the list of subjects being evaluated? If so, can you tell me how many hours it showed for each? I believe it's because of these 2 subjects, others were required to retake medical-surgical nursing. I'm gonna private message you right now with another question and my email address. In case you can't reply through private message ( just in case your inbox is full here), please reply to my email address or let me know here if you were successful or not in replying through the private message. :)

Hi steppybay! I think what konoha meant was when she opened her downloaded pdf copy of her CES report, she found the hours of her Physical Assessment evaluation by using the command ctrl F. :) She didn't add the number of hours. No one can edit their CES report. Hehe. CGFNS forwards it directly to the BONs electronically, at the same time, they post a downloadable copy of your CES report in your CGFNS account. :)

Ahhh, ok, thanks! My friend is thinking strongly that she will have the same PA evaluation issue and thought it was something that was correctable if there was a problem with the minimum hours needed and easier to ask up-front first, she's awaiting for her CES report now.

Good luck with your application, I know you will get it soon after all these difficult times, so I know you're already studying hard now so that once you get your ATT, you're good to go! Good luck!

oopsie.. Didn't expect that what I pasted would turned out into big fonts.. hmmp.

Few more things.. Jinxedmix, ahhmm hopefully, you'll find out the reason for the deficiency they see in your application and have the best possible solution for it.. Godbless and may the way you think be contagious enough to people you interact with..

With regards to the points you have thoroughly explained, what more can I add up? nursing market really on a variable rate through this years and decades. hehe. I remember the story my aunt told me, that when she was studying BSN, way back years years ago, there was also an oversupply of nurses, but she still carried on what she started. Then the shortage came, and she was thankful she continued and pursued this career. oh well, we are just another part of history unfolding, and let's just make the most of it.. There were just times when I ask myself that why am I working on this field that I don't want to (working at a dental office).. There will always be a lesson for us to pick up from all our experiences.. What a journey it has been.. hehe.. I'm doing too much talking, now need to focus on review. stay focused.. enjoy

Haha, aww, thanks. :) Really, an oversupply happened before? Then that just re-enforces what I think of the whole matter. Just because we encountered a road block caused by these hard times, this shouldn't stop us from pursuing our dreams. Thanks for sharing! We all can get inspiration from your aunt's story. And it's ok, you can speak as much as you want here. No need to hold back especially since it helps us. Hehe. Good luck on your NCLEX review!

Hello jinxedminx,

Thanks for sharing with us your status in Nevada.. they did not say they evaluated my CES report . because when CGFNS-CES emailed me that i already have my issued report forwarded to Nevada, saying" congratulations" so i was happy then. when i opened my applicants copy, it did not say about "physical assessment " thing, it just says that my nursing education in the Philippines is ...

Comparable To:

Comparable to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program

in the United States.

Comments: This credential, however, represents completion of only ten years of

primary and secondary school education followed by four years of university for a total of fourteen years of education.

My school where i graduated breakdown the hours that i had taken in my nursing years. they never leave anything as blank. so when i called them , they asked me about the English Proficiency Certificate , then i could sit for the NCLEX once i pass the criteria. if u want to know about how many hours for lectures/theory for my physical assessment, you can add me ..thanks.

OMG thank you for posting this! After rereading it, I just realized CGFNS made a total (and most likely, ANOTHER) mistake with my report!!! It says exactly that in mine... but it shouldn't because I have more than 6 years for my primary school. So the total for the primary and secondary school education and the overall years of education is so wrong!! Geez, did they just copy and paste this without checking the accuracy... they have all the info provided for regarding me educational timeline. I've heard of others having to correct some minor dates on the report... but my gosh, I feel like they totally butchered my evaluation. XO I understand they're humans too.. but they should realize these documents in their hands directly affect our future. They're very important to our career! To our lives! If they can't do that, they should at least consider how much we're paying for their services.. and having to pay for a re-evaluation due to their mistakes doesn't seem right.

hi konoha,

thanks a lot for the info in your timeline.let's not give up and be positive always..good luck in ur review. i added u already.

@Jinxedminx,i think u can still appeal to CFGNS-CES for your case. u can send handwritten letter to the person in charge for it. Me, i sent one last week for some corrections on my school name and they advised me to do it handwritten. it's our right to do some corrections if valid since we paid their services..good luck!

To jinxedminx (maybe you should change that moniker, lol, you're truly getting "jinked")

but yea, I would do what Daisy said, ask for another re-evaluation, but at no cost, or at least submit the funds but ask if they can withold it (but maybe they are too big of a company to do so)

I think you're right and if that happens to my friend, that's what we should do...write an good explanation and based on your penmanship, you're a darn good writer! Good luck!

Oh really, you also had to make corrections? They said it has to be handwritten? It can't be type written and mailed or emailed?

Haha. I was expecting someone to say that, surprised it didn't happen sooner. XD I'm very Catholic and not superstitious.. so my username would be the last cause I would blame. I didn't know we can change it though, how can you do that?

Lol, thanks.. but no good penmanship will guarantee accuracy on their part. I'm a little hesitant though because of that one poster who was required to take BOTH PA and Medical-surgical nursing. You can see the letter here: https://allnurses.com/international-nursing/bon-denied-my-772935.html#post6835033 I believe you came across it before... but if you look closely at what's written in the letter... Nevada's reason for requiring med-surg is because of her clinicals not being concurrent... but that's just weird because how in the world did they know that based on the CES report?? CGFNS can't see the clinical schedule based on the transcripts alone, they would need to ask for additional documents like CA BON did. Kuyafern speculated that perhaps that info was endorsed to Nevada from CA. I know for sure I'll be needing a re-evaluation done (whether they charge me or not), but I'm a bit concerned that when Nevada looks over it, even if my PA hours are fixed, they might give me the requirement to do Med-surg because of concurrency. @_@

OMG! I didn't read that one thread, since so many are so disappointing :grumpy:, but yes, you're right, NV does have the same "concurrency" rules, even back to 1952! I know kuyafern and I have concurred that we'll soon see about half of the States will be enforcing the concurrency rules. CA goes back to 1987.

It makes me think somewhere along the way, CHED, PRC and the PNA altered the curriculums in some certain years and these possible changes is what has affected so many of us! Maybe the earlier nurses from PH did in fact, do their courses in the right manner as spelled by the USA BON's of at the least the States that were heavily favorable to the PH nurses.

Maybe when the USA was having its "nursing shortage" with CA being one of them, many in the Phils saw a great business opportunity to take advantage of this "booming" need, so thus the explosion of PH nursing schools and this caused the demand to keep the courses concurrent was not longer possible with tons of students needing to complete their cases before graduation.

The supply of PH nurses just exceeded the actual needs, as what was happening at the same time, was the hugh increase of USA educated nurses graduating to fulfill the local needs as it was costing the hospitals too much money to sponsor a foreign nurse AND to wait 6 years or more, unlike the hiring years before. That's why it's rare now to find a hospital willing to sponsor a foreign nurse today and we see here where many foreign nurses have waited years to come on staff only to have the hospital revoke that privilege and cancel the contract and many foreign nurses are stuck in trying to find a replacement sponsor.

Then, we find that the "demand" for PH nurses will not occur until 2020, which now seems like that's where we're headed. But with all USA nursing schools still experiencing the high demand and wait listing of students and high unemployment rates of new grads nationwide, I think 2020 is being conservative and more like add another 5 years or decade to that.

I know there are facilities needing nurses in the nursing homes, SNF, LTC, personal care taker, private nursing, etc, but many of us younger nurses are preferring to work in the medium to larger hospitals (just speaking for at least myself and many of my friend's and their friends). But I know many PH students and grads always say they will work anywhere, but the truth is that's not always the case, when it comes down to working where our "true passion" is at (be it in ER, L&D, Med-surg, Peds, ICU, Organ transplant, Onology and the many many different specialities).
