Nevada NCLEX (New) Requirement Physical Assessment Course for Foreign Graduates

hello, although i come here often, i'm not a very active poster because i saw how bad some arguments end up. but i felt this information was very important to share with all of you. i am a bsn graduate from the philippines and i recently applied for the nclex-rn in nevada. yesterday, i received a letter from their bon stating my application is "denied with an educational option". based on my ces report, they are requiring me to complete a physical assessment course at a board approved nursing program in the us with a grade of "c" or higher. and once i send them the transcripts/documentation showing completion, i will be allowed to take the test.

this came to a surprise to me because i have relatives and friends who are also bsn graduates from the philippines and didn't have this problem. and the most recent ones that applied were around 2009-2010. they are already licensed and working. their curriculum was almost identical with mine wherein physical assessment was integrated into the rle (related learning experience) and fundamentals of nursing practice subject (most especially throughout my second year). maybe it should have been clarified in my ces report. but i highly believe this is a newly mandated and/or they are becoming more strict. either way, i am more than willing to comply with it. i'm aware that in most if not all us nursing programs have physical assessment as a separate course.

this may not be a problem for all foreign graduates who took physical assessment as a separate subject. in the philippines though, when i graduated two years ago, i believe most nursing programs didn't have it separated. but after i left, i know that in my school, and perhaps others, they made changes in the curriculum possibly making it a separate subject. so recent graduates may not have to encounter this same problem.

i consulted my aunt regarding this since she is active in the nursing education system. she holds a doctorate in nursing and is currently teaching in the masters program in her school in new jersey. apparently, this physical assessment course requirement has also been recently mandated in the new jersey board of nursing. and in her school, foreign graduates applying for the nclex go there to complete that requirement. only difference though in their state, they just need to show a certification for that course, there is no grade. i believe this requirement is relatively new.. possibly for all states or eventually will be for all states regarding foreign nursing graduates... or maybe just those with a ces report? but anyways my main point of this post is to ask:

do any of you know of a school where i can take just this physical assessment course? preferably in southern california or the nevada area. if there are approved online courses, that would help very much as well.

has anyone received the same requirement?

do you think this will be an additional requirement for the ca bon for foreign nurses?

to give a background, i am a us citizen, born and raised in ca, but took my tertiary education in the philippines. like many of you, i encountered the concurrency problem when i tried to apply for the nclex in ca. and it broke my heart because i am from here and my family lives here. but my mother's advise, who is also a nurse, was to just apply to nevada and eventually fulfill the requirements of ca (since no one has actually succeeded in doing that just yet). the completing of a physical assessment course seems more possible so i guess it's not so bad. but it does suck how it becomes more and more difficult. i'd also like to know:

are there any updates regarding a school in ca where we can complete our ob and med-surgical requirements for the ca bon?

since it is so hard to find a ca school that accepts foreign grads wanting to only take two subjects, will the ca bon allow us to complete the requirements in other us state schools?

do any of you know if holding a master's degree in nursing in another state will qualify the foreign graduate to be licensed in ca? i think it was mentioned before but i'd like to clarify this if it's true or not.

i actually have a lot to say regarding the concurrency problem in ca. but maybe i'll save it for later, since i don't want to stray too far away from the main topic.

Hello, so sorry for the late reply! I am yet to hear of another person that encountered the same problem as me so you might not as well. I heard from Kuyafern, he heard another foreign grad who applied in Nevada was required to take a Med-surgical class.. I'm not sure if he/she is also from the Philippines. Don't feel sad, the best thing you can do is try and see by applying. :) Keep positive so you can focus on your review. I am currently working on finding out about a possible continuing education course that I may take that is usually given to those lacking PA units to enter a master's program. At the same time, I'm also working on possible other states that I may apply to.. I'm trying to get to the root of what happened with my CES report first though. I'll keep you updated! Let me know how your Nevada application goes. Good luck to you too! :)

Im applying on Nv , anyone got approve to get their eligibilty.. Pls update.. Goodluck to us..

I got a call from my sister today in California. I'm also a US citizen studying currently in the Philippines for my BSN degree and I will graduate this coming March. I plan on taking my NCLEX either in CA, OR, or IL. My sister has mentioned that her friend also graduated from the Philippines this March 2012 and is having a difficult time for the Board application. She says that they are looking for some type of IV therapy class? Which I will be taking this semester merged into the Med-Surg 106. Did you guys have any difficulties with the IV therapy requirement? And I'd like to know the update about the Physical assessment you guys have been talking about. I will definitely talk to the Dean of Nursing when I get the time. The dean should definitely worry because as of now I have 5 other classmates that are also US Citizens and will take the NCLEX in CA after graduating.

Hello there romamor,

Have you completed your cases a long with the corresponding theories? If so then you wouldn't have much of a problem. The physical assessment requirement is required from Nevada Board of Nursing. jinxedminx stated that she found a physical assessment program but it is for a continuing program of nursing. As for the IV therapy class, California maybe looking for a class solely on IV therapy. There are IV training classes here so if the state won't recognize the IV therapy class that is incorporated with the NCM 106. Here is a link http://www.bvnpt.ca.gov/education/schools/iv_bw_providers.shtml Some states now require a license and experience in order to apply for the NCLEX like Vermont.

I didn't, but if you check "starleviosa" threads, she just recently got her NV license and even found work already! She was also a CA reject. Guys, so it can be done!

Hmmm....that's a new requirement of the IV therapy from the CA BON, they must have found some other possible missing PH course that's not being taught.

But yea, as kuyafern mentions, make sure that you guys are taking your clinicals AND theory classes/courses in the EXACT SAME SEMESTER, not a month later, not a year or more later, or you will be facing the dreaded rejection letter from the CA BON.

A few PH friends have told me in no certain terms that since this problem with the concurrency issue started, the PH courses and new grads from 2014 on may be the safest to pass their applications in CA, but it really depends on if your school has already started to take a more proactive approach and actually implemented earlier.

You must have completed everything BEFORE you graduate to comply with the concurrency rule.

Are there other problems that your sister mentioned with those having their application besides the IV therapy?

Hey i already replied to your pm just want to know if you received it or not?

that's what i thought too.. i never encountered another phil grad who applied in nevada and have the same problem. :( is starleviosa still active on allnurses?

Hello Hello.. pls add me too jinxedmix.. Today my CES report from CGFNS was mailed already to NV BON.. Do you have any idea how many more days or weeks will it take for NV to decide on my case? I have completed all the requirements they posted and as soon a they receive that CES, I hope they'll have the decision already.. I never thought a thing or issue like this will come up from NV. I have also found out in one of the posts that there are only 39 states left where we, foreign grads can easily get our atts.. I dont know what to feel now, for earlier, I was in tears for having that CES report issued, as I was checking it every night for 2 weeks, I mean online..

Oh well, I'm talking a lot now.... BTW, I really admire the way you reasoned out with one of the posers, on why you don't see the US education as invaluable, and vice versa.. I like your attitude and the way you view this hindrances in our nursing career. keep up the good work. You are inspirational, coz I believe if this happened to someone else, like me for example (maybe), the way they'll react and feel towards this will be more deeply devastating, and with a pessimistic tone.. I mean I like your optimism. Hope to see you around NV if ever.. God bless..

I'm also a CA reject, graduated 2011..

hello konoha,

i am not a frequent poster here but i do follow posts/comments . like many other IEN grad., i was also denied by CA BON last June after 6 months of waiting.Since i can't afford for my schooling here to fullfill my deficiency in MS/OB both clinical and theory. I never wasted my time, i tried to apply in Nevada State with the hope they will give me a chance to sit for NCLEX, i followed what they posted on their website and last Sept. 4, 2012 i got a reply from CGFNS-CES for the results and they forwarded it to Nevada and for me to be sure for everything, i called Nevada and they told they need my certificate for English proficiency for me to sit the exam once i pass it.. for my own understanding, i think i 've met the requirements needed in Nevada as for the credentials are concerned. so i hope i could take the TOEFl exam this month. i am just having a self review and do some online practice exam...If i were you, u try to call Nevada BON for u to ask your status. They're are kind and very nice to answer your queries..Good Luck!

Hi there daisycariaga,

That's good that you have gotten a letter from the BON stating that you are eligible to exam. Thank you for informing us. I just need to wait for my report from CGFNS and Nevada.
