hello,

Is it true that hospitals in Australia won't hire you if you were not an active staff in a hospital setting for more than 5 months from the time you got to Australia to commence your bridging/schooling?

Like, they don't want any gaps in your work history?

I already resigned from my job last August since I was bound for the October intake in UNISA, but failed to comply with my requirements in time.

Now I will be moved to the April intake.

I hope someone may shed light on this issue.

Thank you.

Never heard of this requirement. Hospitals however are not going to look at you from overseas if it has been 3-5 years since you graduated and you only have 3 months of experience.

The problem has the lack of experience that some overseas nurses have had when working over here. They graduate do some of this volunteer nursing for 0 - 3 months, then nothing for 1-2 years and then were expected to be up to scratch when taking on a full time job in another country.

Now there is more nurses to choose from, they are taking all experience and gaps into consideration.

It is generally considered in Australia if you are out of the hospital system for more than 2years you need much more orientation and support.

Even if I already resigned from the hospital and have not worked in a hospital setting over 6 mos prior to my course?

My counselor at IDP office mentioned that they are particular with employment gaps.

I would like to verify this.

What more can I say.... if it is sometime since you have worked as an RN such as one year and can be against you, but there is no law or regulation saying you cannot have gaps in nursing experience.

It is up to the interviewer and what skills you can bring to the job. No specialist skills, not much experience, gap of over 1 year, will not give you a job, over someone else, that has recent RN experience.

Alright, duly noted ^^

I have worked for over 4 years already (mostly in a critical setting)

I'll try to do some short courses or gain short certificates prior to my schooling.

Thank you~
