Kindly lose the caps and excuse me but what? I have a friend who was sponsored not two weeks ago, the total processing time was 6 to 8 weeks for him, he did encounter difficulties in finding one but he managed to start off as casual and quickly picked up shifts until he was offered a sponsorship. The market is getting saturated but there is still a demand, the trick (as I observed) would be getting your foot into the door. Take into account that Australia is beginning to produce its own graduates and that there is a trend of casualisation of the work force making full time employment (required by 457) scarce and if you would be relying on sponsorship, such a position is usually not vacant. Now, I am for appealing to AHPRA and NMBA for them to get their act together but petitioning a foreign government is something else, they would have to appease their own people first. Look, if they didn't need nurses, it would be out of the window as far as the SOL is concerned.

I believe they have more problems with boatmen and refugees appealing to them more than nurses wanting to compete with those already onshore or would not have to rely on their visas.

Each country has the right to decide on how people emigrate and if skilled people what the skills are. Each government is responsible to look after their own citizens first before offering work to outsiders.

Guys I am not saying do not follow your dream but do not try and force yourself onto a country that has caps on when trying to control how things work and support their own people first. Be aware of the requirements, be aware of any caps that may be in place (Canada comes to mind as they have a skilled list and it is capped and assessed yearly) and will determination you can make your dream it just may take longer than thought of.

Not this way.

This will go no where, as well said before Mr Abbott has better things to consider.

I pay the money so I have the right! New graduates from overseas were well aware of growing situation of new Australian Grads when applying and decline in popularity of the 457 visa.

Let me put it this way I paid 30,000 au, as an Australian for my nursing degree, that will be a noose around my neck for the next 20 years to pay back. 99% of Australian nursing students are in or will be in the same situation and there are now too few jobs for them and many of them have parents that worked very hard to pay for them to just go to university ie: food, clothing, accommodation, books, transport for 3 long years who (parents) probably paid about 200,00- au in tax over those years.

I work hard very hard for someone my age, I work all the crap hours and weekends just to make ends meet to pay the rent (thank goodness I still enjoy my job) and put food on the table and put a child through university and I do not want someone from overseas that pays some money to be given a job over my child! and I am not alone.

I pray every day that I will not come down with health issues or my family will suffer as I have debts up to my eyeballs.

There seems to be a misconception that Australians are handed everything on a silver platter and when our government does anything in favour of locals there is outrage. I never see this against the Phillipines gov. California BON NMC who all have favoured their own grown over the years when things got tough.

I do manage to put food on the table, even if it, near pay day is a piece of toast with vegemite on it fro breakfast, lunch and tea for the last few days of the pay week, yum, yum. :)

At my age, building or owning a home is out of the question as the cost of these rise way above the average person with supporting a family beyond reach. Keeping and driving a car is now so costly that it takes a large chunk out of the fortnightly pay just to get to work.

The government is cutting health budgets and aged care. The other day was told get private health insurance as someone who had breast cancer was told she would have to wait at least 3 months for any treatment. Aged care is having cuts and soon the providers will not be able to provide the best care for our older Australians who deserve the best and in the years to come I will deserve it too.

Our charities are being inundated with people requiring help everyday and cannot cope with the demand and turn people away, ah yes the lucky country as many are now coming that actually have jobs need help as expenses rise.

Ah but yes the lucky country, probably better than some, but not for much longer as the burden of government spending outstrips the taxpayers.

So as most people will have sorry thoughts for those who in this predicament who have paid out a bucket load of money and now believe they have the right to now live and work here, it becomes, well best of luck, you are also most lucky than some that want to come to Australia, you have a nursing degree that is paid for and a roof over your head, many do not, many Australians do not either and as an Australian who believes my family and my hard work also needs to be rewarded with a job....good luck.

I understand how frustrating it can be.. Also did my nclex, Cgfns, certification etc in the US, but i didn't end up working there.. Been there 2x to visit, would I still want to work there given the chance? Yes. But I've always accepted that it would be in their terms, same as coming to the Uk, I feel like I've been downgraded as a diploma nurse, but that's the system where I chose to go.

So I don't have problems waiting, maybe Bec I'm still working, although I'm far from happy I would say, and no, I don't necessarily feel good about comparing myself to others, as far as I'm concerned my goal is to get to aus, work and get a post grad. Where I am now , and the choices I make, are mine and the fact that I'm in debt now, when I shouldn't be because of my visa applications and still waiting for Ahpra are also my choices.

Australian nurses wages are the attraction to Australia after all. Funny to be annoyed about rude unions, when, due to committment by union members and unionists they got the OS and Australian nurses the attractive wages and just as well these days due to escalating living costs.

Cultural sensitivity? whats that? you have a culture, yes I do.

I present to you how people power worked for this group of nurses. This is what I have posted before, let us AHPRA/NMBA that we are here. We are many yet our voices are not heard.

From AHPRA site:

04 Sep 2014

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and AHPRA have announced a response for some nurses and midwives caught by changes to regisration requirements in February 2014.

National Board and AHPRA response for applicants approved for skilled migration before new model

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (National Board) and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) are pleased to announce an option for internationally qualified nurses and midwives caught by changes to registration requirements in February 2014.

Since we announced in mid-August our commitment to help those nurses and midwives currently seeking registration with the National Board, who were approved for skilled migration before the new model for assessing qualifications took effect, the National Board and AHPRA have been investigating transitional arrangements that are lawful, sensible and timely.

The National Board is holding applications from a number of IQNMs in this specific situation and has confirmed it will register nurses and midwives who:

meet all National Board registration requirements other than qualifications

hold a qualification at AQF level 6 and above, and have no subsequent qualifications that will allow for registration

were approved for skilled migration by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) before 10 February 2014 and then found their qualifications were no longer adequate to gain registration in Australia after 10 February 2014

applied for registration with the National Board by 29 August 2014, and have therefore registered their intent to practise as nurses or midwives, and

hold a valid ANMAC Letter of Determination, or an Australian visa obtained on the basis of the ANMAC approval, at the time of application.

The National Board has confirmed it will register these applicants without requiring them to complete a Board-approved bridging program of study.

'The National Board recognises that these nurses and midwives were caught in a difficult situation, as they may have made irreversible decisions - such as migrating to Australia - in good faith, based on the outcome of ANMAC's skills assessment,' said National Board Chair Dr Lynette Cusack, RN.

'Our option for them is lawful, practical and in line with professional standards,' said Dr Cusack.

Only applicants who were assessed and approved by ANMAC for skilled migration based on their nursing or midwifery skills are eligible.

The National Board has no lawful solution available to applicants who have migrated to Australia under any other visa type, such as spousal visas or working holiday visas.

The National Board is still determining the best approach for those nurses and midwives approved by ANMAC before 10 February 2014 but whose qualification is at AQF level 5 or below.

On behalf of the National Board, AHPRA is working to speed up application assessment and processing for the eligible group of nurses and midwives.

Over it.

No, I'm not signing that badly written petition. So, don't jump into conclusion that this is related to that. I know how much you hate overseas nurses going to Australia. I can provide quotations of your posts belittling us here and even UK nurses from another forum, ceridwyn.

My crusade is for faster assessment by AHPRA, better handling of applications, better communications to applicants.

To all Filipino forumers:

Please check your e-mails, I heard that some applicants have been given their decision today. I hope there are Filipinos who got their much awaited verdict. Please inform us here. Thank you!

There is alot of Job vacancies for Nurses in Australia but because of the red tapes imposed on 457 Visa Employers could not easily hire staffs, believe me Ive been in touched with many Hospital HR staffs and Ive research numerous Hospitals and theres alot of vacancies.

Hi aldzbp20,

How long have you been chasing for that sponsorship? Have you tried agencies? When did you undergo BP? Which school?

And what policies imposed on 457 made it very difficult to get sponsorship?

It would not hurt if you just sign the PETITION. Look, many Employers dont sponsor Overseas Registered Nurse because of the policies imposed on 457 VISA. Yes, theres alot of vacancy, Ive applied to countless Hospitals but most of them replied that they do not offer sponsorship. Yes, there is still sponsorship but its lile1 of 10 institution, and believe me its not that easy to apply even online as you have to fill up alot of questions and selection criteria. I know because im a reg nurse now in Australia.
