caliotter3,

I think many like the OP are people who have been living in California as either citizens of the US or dual citizens of the Philippines and the US. They decided to go to nursing school in the Philippines in order to avoid the nursing school admission lottery system or the high cost of private nursing school education in California.

It's an unfortunate lesson learned that have cost them a lot of time as well as a price tag that is not worth it in the end. I don't have other advice than to pursue the RN license somewhere else other than California. LVN, I'm afraid is not the answer because jobs are very few and far between for LVN's in the state. If RN's are struggling now, it's worse for LVN's here.

Hi kababayan! Disappointing and hopeless as it may seem, there is still a way. I have a friend who went through the same ordeal as you had. Instead of giving up, she applied for New Mexico and she recently passed The NCLEX-RN. She won't be able to endorse her license in Cali but other states still can accept her license endorsement. I know that it may be hard for you to move away from where your family is to somewhere you'd be on your own but the preparation time you'll have once you'll apply for other states can be beneficial to you. The application process can give you enough time to prepare for the exam, plan things through and save enough money to search for jobs after you pass the boards. :redbeathe

We graduated at the same time and the waiting for the license to practice what we have worked and studied hard for, is discouraging. But looking back from where we are right now, this chance we have, will make us realize how blessed we are. Our batch mates and even those ahead of us back home, are having a hard time too looking for the chance we are blessed with. We are here to try, learn and live the dream. So don't fret over one turned down option. Rules and laws can be strict and harsh but it is implemented to protect the people who are the most vulnerable and need the out most care.

As what the nursing profession taught us, use ADPIE to solve the problem and don't forget, to pray because Jesus will give us the wings to be the angels in the sickroom :nurse:

Wait! Just so that we're on the same page, you did give your evaluator your batchmate's name AND her RN license numbers and CA BON still stated it was a "different case"? Then, yes, I would be confused too, given that it sounded like you and your batchmate were attached at the hips. Maybe your batchmate had a different evaluator, but still should not matter.

It sounds like the timing of application was what made the difference. The OP graduated in March 2011 and just applied with CA BRN recently. The batchmate applied earlier than the OP (before November 2011 when the board allegedly started to enforce pre-existing regulations). The batchmate may have gotten lucky this time but who knows...there's rumors that license renewals can be a problem for those who made it through the first time but had credentials that didn't meet California's requirement. It remains to be seen and I think the OP might be hesitant to "cause trouble" for this peer.

Philippines does have their theory and clinicals at the same time. Its just that the " 25 cases" are not completed at that time. We are still exposed to the clinical side of the theory taught in the classroom. I was wondering if US educated nurses have to complete any "cases" like how the Philippine curriculum does? (The 5 minor, 5 major. etc..)

You're right on the part where the curriculum in the Philippines require that theory and clinicals are concurrent except for the OR, Labor and Delivery, and Nursery completion cases. This is a newer development because back when I was a student, you don't advance to the next school year unless all required cases for that year are completed. You're also right that these completion cases are not required in US pre-licensure nursing programs. However, such a technicality is causing applicants to be non-compliant with CA law on how nursing school curriculum should be structured.

I gave every detail of my batchmate to my evaluator and still she was firm with her decision...anyway instead of hoping for the impossible I have laid down several options and plans that she (my evaluator) offered me...but for RN I guess the only explanation is that IVE GOT THE WRONG TIMING....

i have the same prob. do you mind contacting me at [email protected]?

thanks
