Complying with CA BON deficient courses

As the title states for the folks that have to take certain courses such as OB, MS or either Psyc, has anyone visited and spoken to any Nursing directors at the approved CA BON Nursing Schools listed on the website?

If so please share us your thoughts on the matter, it would help thousands of Nursing Graduates that received this special requirement that we need to comply with the CA BON before NCLEX examination.

Hi, were you able to apply to the Board of Vocational Nursing to apply to take the NCLEX PN? How far have you go? As far as my case, it's been more than a month now since I applied to Board of Vocational Nursing until now I haven't received any feedback letter from them.

The issue is foreign educated nurses fail 70percent that is unacceptable. US nurses are taught to read the nurse practice act of their state. Passing the NClEX the first time and understanding how the BON operates is basic nursing practice. To solve your problem become a lvn, and take a bridge program to become R N, problem solved.[/quote'] Hi, I would like to ask if you know some one who had been denied by the CA Board of RN who applied to the Board of Vocational Nursing to take the NCLEX VN? As on my case, I was denied because my clinicals are not concurrent with the theoretical. After receiving the denial letter, I applied to the Board of VN hoping that they gonna allow me to take the exam. I do hope, it's been more than a month now since I applied. I haven't heard from them.

Are you referring to the two schools? If so, I have not as I can't afford to pay the expensive tuition at this time.

I'm sure that with over a thousand plus foreign students also going to try to get into these two schools, they could either be a waiting list or the time period to apply has gone by and need to wait for the time the applications are open, once you have fulfilled all the other minimum requirements they are asking for.

I do know that the school in San Francisco (SFSU) not only filled up fast with about over 900 foreign applicants after 1-2 spots, there was not only ones from PH, but from China, India and Russia and I'm sure other countries as well.

I thought I'd move up this thread and ADD the deficiency courses (MS/OB) that's been the thorn in the international students site.

There are a few (kuyafern, in particular) that started the most recent information finding mission, lol, thanks!

Add CSU-Fresno as another school, contact them directly or check out the other thread on this school's short offering info...guys, read the forum!

They need 30 students to make it happen, last word they are at 20 as of last week or so and would not be surprised if they are making a wait list.

I can't afford the tuition, which I think may be around $4,000 or more (after books, supplies, tuition, etc), if it's like the other schools, they may require most of the funds up-front if your application is accepted or for sure, before the start of class (expected to start in the summer of 2013).

Guys, this offering is so new, we don't know if it's been approved by the CA BON yet, even though, it's an accredited school, it still has to meet the minimum requirements, since if they are opening up to 30 more students (besides to their regular student nurses), they need to make sure there are enough clinical people and hours that can match the class course or guess what?

It's non-concurrent (again).

Good luck to all!

I'd just like to say to those who criticize people who are being told they have deficiencies in their education by the CA BON that it is not necessarily the case that they chose a school with "inadequate" education. I am Canadian and completed my BScN at one of the largest universities in North America located in Toronto. I still was told I am deficient in obstetrics hours, which makes no sense because I wasn't deficient in psych and they have exactly the same number of theory and clinical hours. It's obvious the CA BON is rejecting foreign applicants for any petty reason and picking apart our nursing education because they don't want to give out licenses to foreigners who will compete with US citizens for jobs. I passed the NCLEX and am licensed and working in Michigan. I could probably attain a license and work in most US states, and despite that along with my education CA will still reject me because of this "deficiency".

As a international student grad from the Phils and just as affected as you, you'll find that what's happening is that the perceived "nursing shortage" and thus notion for needing more nurses globally is not reality and really never was.

We're all caught in the previous years when the US needed nurses so badly that they were offering $5,000-10,000 just to "sign up" to work for them. Hospitals in every State was handing out hospital sponsorships to get in the nurses anyway they could to meet the nurse-patient ratios. But ALL that has disappeared and vanished as quickly due to the bad economy and many older nurses should want to retire but can't due to loss of their retirement benefits and or they must keep working as their own spouses are unemployed for whatever reason. Also, realize that many hospitals have to reduce their staffing due to budget cuts.

In CA alone, there's a CA BON survey of 2011, that over 48% of the CA new grads will not be able to find a nursing job. It's quite evident as one looks at the CA nursing section, 1,000's of CA grads going after 10-20 open new grad jobs. Simply, not enough jobs to hire in any more nurses, as it's very expensive to train a new nurse. Plus to be considered a "new grad" in CA, the hiring is only open to those who graduated and are applying within one year of their graduation date, NOT the month or year, one passes the NCLEX-RN, so that window to find work is more narrow.

You'll find that the theory of the States rejecting foreign nurses and students is not true. With the above statement I mentioned, to stem the overflow of applicants, the various State's BON's are merely enforcing very old rules and regulations (in CA, for us Phils nurses and grads, it's been in their books since 1987). In NV, since 1952! So we must realize that if we're to play the game, we MUST adhere to these rules. It's NOTHING new.

On the flip side, imagine if the BON's did always enforce these rules, there would be 10,000's of international nurses who were given the chance to work in the State, to still be in their own home country and never able to come over.

So yes, even though, you have a MI license, it will most likely not meet the CA BON requirements and be denied. But also know that there are 14-15 other States also enforcing the rules, but in our cases, it's more MS-OB, some psych, not being concurrent etc. But the problem lies NOT with the CA BON, but with the international educational system we were under, but then again, our country (Phils) doesn't care, since they have to meet our country's requirements and NOT any place in the US.

Again, we're in their terrority and as such, we must go by their rules.

Hi there, @steppybay do you have more information about that CSU Fresno program you mentioned? I'm seriously interested. Or any other schools for that matter that's willing to take IENs in? Has anyone here already enrolled in a school program in Cali to fulfill the deficiencies and had success with that? Thanks.

Specializes in OR-ICU.

The CSU Fresno, if CA BON approves of it, will probably be the only option for foreign graduates with deficiencies. No other accredited school will accept students for 1 or 2 classes. You need to come in as a new nursing student, advance placement student or LVN to RN bridge. But that LVN to RN bridge only saves you one semester in the program as far as associate degree nursing programs are concerned. Acceptance into a BSN program is nil.

Are you totally positive that there is no other school out there doing the same thing that CSU Fresno is doing? By you saying we need to come in as a new student... That's another way of saying starting school all over?
