California NCLEX-RN passer w/o SSN wanting to apply for NY license:STEP BY STEP

World Registration

Published

I have seen alot of members who are asking for a STEP BY STEP guide on how to apply for a New York License

most of them are experiencing the problem i have experienced before. I took up the NCLEX-RN last February 09, 2011 for the CALIFORNIA STATE BOARD which i fortunately passed :D the downside is I'm from the Philippines

THE PROBLEM: CALIFORNIA BRN IS REQUIRING SSN BEFORE ISSUING A LICENSE

TAKE NOTE: GUYS ESPECIALLY MY FILIPINO BROTHERS AND SISTERS we can not refer to this process as "ENDORSING/ENDORSEMENT of LICENSE" simply because we do not have an active and valid LICENSE TO ENDORSE..

what i immediately did was to go to NY'S website( http://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/nurse/ ) and contact NY BON for some questions.

THIS IS HOW I STARTED MY PROCESS (just sharing)

To be licensed in NY by "endorsement" of your CA NCLEX-RN

STEP 1: You need to download FORM 1- Application for Licensure and First Registration

http://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/nurse/nurse1.pdf

****All applicants for licensure must complete this form and submit it with the licensure and registration fee of $143.00 directly to the Office of the Professions at the mailing address at the end of Form 1. PLEASE DO NOT SEND CASH. Make checks payable to the New York State Education Department, (to my Filipino friends my bank BDO does not issue money order they only do demand draft which means no refunds, PLEASE make sure that you READ INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY NOT ONLY FROM THIS INFO BUT FROM THE FORM ITSELF). You must answer all questions and provide all information requested unless otherwise indicated. Failure to complete all required parts of the application will delay its review. Form 1 must be signed in the presence of a Notary Public.

STEP 2: Download Form 3 – Certification of Approval of Nursing Program and/or License Status or Licensing Examination Results

http://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/nurse/nurse3.pdf

****This form must be submitted by the licensing authority, I paid $60 for this. Use this form if you are applying for licensure by endorsement of a license in another U.S. jurisdiction. Complete Section I and forward this form to the licensing authority of the jurisdiction in which you passed the State Board Test Pool (SBTP) or the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX). Ask the licensing authority to complete Sections II and III and submit the completed form directly to the Office of the Professions at the address at the end of the form.

STEP 3: CGFNS Credentials Verification

****If you seek to meet the education requirements for Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse through a program you completed outside the United States, your educational credentials must be verified by an independent credentials verification organization. For additional information, contact:

The Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS)

PO Box 8628, Philadelphia, PA 19104-8628

http://www.cgfns.org/

Contact numbers can be found through the website

PLEASE NOTE: This verification process is not the same as CGFNS certification (which is required for Registered Nurse limited permit applicants only). The CGFNS credentials verification process for New York State licensure applicants is a process for verifying the authenticity of your education credentials. It is not an evaluation or certification process.

*** YOU NEED TO ACCOMPLISH TWO COURSES FOR NY

SANITATION/INFECTION CONTROL AND CHILD ABUSE

For information on the Child Abuse course and Infection control, including the exemption form and a list of approved providers, visit their website at

http://www.op.nysed.gov/training/camemo.htm.

You may also take this course online at http://www.elearnonline.net,

click on course offerings, and then click on New York.

I think i paid around $45 for both of them

I HOPE I WAS ABLE TO HELP SOME OF YOU :D GOODLUCK :up::up:

Now, the only problem left is CGFNS's slowwwwwwww process :crying2: anyway i guess i just have to patiently wait... :)

thanks for the quick response and reliable answers. i wish you both more success, health, and happiness. you guys been so helpful.

I would just like to ask one thing. I am a registered nurse here in the Phils.. I applied for my NCLEX last 2009 and took the exam just this June 2011. I stopped at the 75th question and was so anxious to wait for the results. However, almost 4 month have passed and still I didn't receive any results. I was just wondering because during 2009, CA did not require any SSN and I passed my application during that time. But I took the exam just this 2011 when CA BON implemented the SSN requirement. Could I still have my license in case I pass? Also, I haven't received my results til now. Huhu. I just wanna know if I passed or failed. It's not a joke spending a lot of money for a single test. Please, enlighten me on this. :(

hi MichaelRN14!

we are in the same situation actually, only difference is my BON is Arkansas, I already received my letter of passing and stated there that I need to provide them with US SSN before they could issue me a license.

Try the PVT trick and check whether you pass or fail, it is accurate IMO. 4 months seems pretty long..

Good luck!

You need to contact the BRN they will not issue a license without a SSN but should send you a letter

@nursejas

Hi nursejas, feels good to meet someone very thoughtful here in the cyberworld of nurses. Anyways, I have reviewed this from Form 1 and it's quite confusing:

Item no. 18

Do you now hold, or have you ever held, a license or certificate to practice any profession* in any jurisdiction? Yes No

If yes, list each license/certificate, state or jurisdiction and provide appropriate information in the columns below. A Form 3 must be submitted for each professional license/certificate listed unless it is a license/certificate issued by the New York State Education Department. See theApplicant Instructions on Form 3 for specific information about completing and submitting the form.

I believe this instruction means that we only intend to send form 3 if we hold a license? IS that correct? or have i interpreted this wrongfully?

I am an NCLEX-passer in the state of Florida and likewise do not possess a US Social Security Number, I am hoping to get all this done to obtain a license in New York since they do not require a SSN.

And by the way, did you receive your NY RN plastic license already? Thanks. :)

hi markosmea! i just want to ask if Oregon does not require SSN too? im really confused because i've checked their site and they said they need SSN to issue my license, but when i called the agency who assist nclex applicants, they said Oregon does not require SSN, just IELTS. thank u... :)

hello michaelRN14!!! :)

1. sad to say but unfortunately they will not issue any license not unless you would be able to

submit a social security number... it has always been like that from time immemorial, you must be

asking "why would they even bother to find you eligible to take nclex when they wont even issue

you the license?"... that's probably the reason why they dont accept applicants without a ssn now a days.

2. regarding your concern on ur results, i suggest you contact BRN but you can also try the pearsonvue trick

theres a thread that teaches you how to do it but just to give you a heads up heres what you gotta do..

2.1) log on to you pearsonvue acct.http://www.pearsonvue.com/nclex

2.2) upper left corner theres a tab that says "register" below "current activity"click it

2.3) select nclex-rn

2.4) you will be directed to a page that says REGISTER:SELECT A COUNTRY then you would have to select

the country where you "took" nclex-rn in my case its Philippines click on next

2.5) then a page would appear with a gray background that contains several questions

those that appear with a red * sign are required fields

2.6) its gonna ask yoU "HAVE YOU EVER TAKEN NCLEC EXAM BEFORE" answer YES

next question *SELECT THE NURSING PROGRAM FROM WHICH YOU GRADUATED. PLEASE FILL IN ANY COMBINATION OF THE

FOLLOWING FIELDS COUNTRY: PHILIPPINES THEN HIT search button to get the program code

make sure "philippines" option is toggled says program name: philippines program code 99-425 location:phl

2.7) answer * SELECT the BOARD OF NURSING FROM WHICH YOU ARE SEEKING LICENSURE: answer where the board

where you sought in my case its CALIFORNIA BOARD OF REGISTRED NURSING

2.8) click on next

it is said that when you have passed the examination pearsonvue will not direct you to the credit card page and a

prompt will appear

but if you have failed then it will automatically direct you to the payment option page

for further explination i suggest you make a reseach on it as well, i have tried it and it is 100 percent true

in my opinion

:)

wish you all the luck hope to hear from you soon :)

@jenxx

congratulations on passing the NLE in my own personal opinion its 10x harder than nclex, so am sure ud be able to pass it!! :)

well for one NY doesnt need ssn...

hmmm texas doesnt need one either, am not sure if virginia requires ssn..

but please do "more" research as well you can try emailing them to verify all information :)

GOODLUCK... i suggest u choose texas my friend got her license in 3 months :)

Hi jenx, i believe Oregon has stricter regulations for licensure. I have once read that they needed an SSN for you to acquire your RN license. I suggest you try NY and Texas. Best of luck
