where to get PMHNP

Specialties NP

I am going to be starting an FNP program in the fall that is local but I am actually more interested in pscyh. I should be done with the FNP by 2011 and was thinking I could do a post cert in psych. Does anyone know where I could do this certification online or mostly online? I know it would be a couple years from now but I guess I could call to find out how long it will be available.

I feel like it is worth doing an FNP first as the masters will make it easier for me at least to have a job. Everyone seems to think the FNP is most flexible. I also dont really want to move away unless I have to and in that case dont want to do it for more than a year. I am a single parent so that would not be easy. I think I could swing it for a while but not forever.

Any suggestions I would appreciate. Do you think I should just go straight for the PMNP?

HI- I did an FNP first, with the idea of staying in psych. where I have always worked, but I wanted more knowledge in the medical area too. There is much overlap medical/psych. in practice as you can imagine! I took a post FNP psych NP track (now called PMHNP). The classwork wasn't too bad, especially as that was my background but I did have to do 3 MORE clinicals for a total of 6 - yikes! Still, I'm glad I did it. The 2 tracks are very different as you can imagine and as it should be!
