I need to learn how to suture for my new job. I tried to look up some suturing classes, but nothing came up. I typed in searches for suturing classes, stitching classes, and no luck. Nothing legit, or with a clear explanation of how much / what is included in class. Closest one I could find was in Washington. I live in schaumburg, Illinois. Please let me know if there is a suturing class nearby.

Specializes in OR, Nursing Professional Development.

Have you tried contacting the manufacturer of the suture where you work? When the staff in my OR who are deemed eligible to learn how to suture incisions need a class (or a refresher), that is who we go to.

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

ENA is located in Chicago - look at their site.

IL Society of Advanced Practice Nurses also offers suturing courses - unfortunately you just missed the conference (first part of October). However, they might know of something.

National Procedures Institute is another company that offers procedural CME - they have an upcoming one in Dallas in November.

Specializes in ER, PCU, UCC, Observation medicine.

I have some videos on youtube, for basic suturing 101 stuff. If you can get your own supplies you can just follow along, go on youtube and search for TheNP suture workshop, there are about 5-6 videos.

pork belly works great as a learning tool

Sim Vivo offers a kit and videos that help. I receive no compensation for mentioning that brand or site but found the kit to be helpful.

Fitzgerald has some workshops for it.

And my local APRN group had a work shop for it at their annual conference last month. I was not a fan of the frozen pigs foot and broke one of the needles, but my sutures look pretty good.

after not suturing for 2 years, i learned how to do it again on youtube.

You don't need to dump money on a structured course to learn this skill, especially for the stuff we have to suture.

buy some cheap suture stuff on amazon and just practice

Specializes in Surgery.

I agree YouTube videos are great. Grab a suture kit, needle holder and some blue throw away OR towels and you're good to go. You could do a RNFA course too..

Your videos are excellent, thank you!

My favorite video. I close all the time, primarily using interrupted buried sutures, or simple interupted sutures. Sometimes a mattress suture if the patient is kind of big. No class can teach you what you need. Just get in and do it.

I think it depends entirely what level of suturing you want to obtain and why. If you want to throw some basic interrupted stitches once in a while, yes online videos and similar stuff is fine. If you want to become more of an expert take a good course that is longer than the obligatory 3-4 he course at your local conference. Take a good 2-4 day legit course and you will definitely see a significant difference. If you go all in and money is no option, do NIFA. Get certified as a first assistant and do their 6 day suturestar workshop, but get ready to fork over 6-7k for the program. The only other program I am aware of that is truly comprehensive is Skills on Point | Suture Training Workshop | Chicago. it's ran by APN staff and they get you up to speed quick for way cheaper than NIFA. They have a Chicago class on their site listed for 16 CE in October 2017, not sure how far that is from you, but worth a look.

Best of luck.
