I was talking to a NP friend of mine and she suggests since NP jobs are advertised to ask MD's if they were looking for a NP or entertain the idea of a NP? What do you think this is so foreign to me. anyone ever do it?

Did you mean "since NP jobs are NOT advertised to ask MD's if they were looking for a NP or entertain the idea of a NP?". Yes, I think this is perfectly acceptable. As NP's we can be our own spokesperson for our profession. We can educate physicians about out role and our contribution to health care. You stand nothing to lose and a lot to gain by doing this such as a possible job offer.

Another resource might be your state's APN organization.

That is how I got my NP job! I really wanted to work in Hospital Medicine above all else so I e-mailed the chair of the dept and asked if he was looking to hire any additional NPs (there was no ad posted anywhere) and he said yes, as a matter of fact, I am looking to hire. :)

I got my job by asking also, I set up a meeting with the director while I had clinical in the facility. No job posted, but I said "hey, I want to work here" and made my case. Turned out well. Apparently they hire the majority of their NP's based on people who approach the clinic (because they are passionate enough about it to do that) instead of job postings.

Good luck!
