Sleep medicine ARNP's?

Specialties NP

Any FNP's specializing in sleep disorders? How do you like it? What other experience did you have (family practice, internal medicine? Other?) Do you feel like you could switch specialties in the future or do you feel locked into sleep medicine at this point ?

I am a fairly new FNP looking for a challenging and rewarding career and really think I would like sleep medicine. Would love to hear experiences!

Thanks!

I treat insomnia all the time as part of being a PMHNP but wouldn't want to just do sleep medicine.

Specializes in Family Practice, Urgent Care.

I treat insomnia in primary care, but also would not want to be solely in sleep medicine.

Specializes in PICU.

I did clinicals in a pediatric sleep clinic. To be kind (since I was grateful to be able to do clinicals) I clearly learned this was not a specialty for me. Much of it was related to parenting practices. Lots of listening to parents/ guardians describe at great length their evening rituals and sleep habits. Yawn. Too far from the acute pace to which I am accustomed. :)

Thanks for the replies. While I do think that sleep medicine is an important sub specialty, my instinct says it has a limited scope of practice with little room for growth. Might not be bad part time for experience, but likely not full time.

Specializes in Pediatric Pulmonology and Allergy.

I'm in peds pulmonology and we do a good amount of sleep medicine. I actually like counseling parents on bedtime issues, but I think I'd be bored out of my mind if sleep medicine was all I did.
