Juan:

I am an California NP and I already have a DEA furnishing number. I had read somewhere that you need to have 45 hours of Pharmacology in order to renew my furnishing license, and another 30 hours to renew my NP license. However, when I looked up the rules for the CA license renewal it seems like you only need 30hrs to renew your license just as would if you were an RN and I see NOTHING that tells me that you need 45 hours of PHARM, can you please clarify or show me where to find this information??

Thanks in advance

There are no CE or Pharmacology credits required to renew NPF. The requirement to have 30 credits of CE with each renewal period applies to the RN license. Both RN and NP can be renewed at the same time. NPF is renewed separately.

Hi-

I have a few questions and need some help navigating through my furnishing license and obtaining a DEA number.

1) I finished my MSN in 2011 and obtained my furnishing license. In Feb. 2013, I obtained my ANCC certificatiion. I am not applying for jobs in Los Angeles and want to know what I need to do or what is required. I've researched the BRN and ANCC website but am so confused.

2) Do I need supervised hours to prescribe? If so, how many? Can I apply for my DEA anytime? Or do I need to work a certain amount of hours?

3) Can I just begin working as an NP? I have my furnishing license, do I need anything else?

I will be working with a primary physician.

PLEASE HELP!!!!

I have a CA, NP furnishing #. I'm coming out of retirement to work in a wt loss center. The Doc is not on site but he has pre packaged and labelled phentermine and Phendermetrazine , schedule 111 and 1V which just need the pt name and date .I am not quite sure if evaluating the client and handing them one the pre packaged drugs requires me to have a DEA(dispensing per protocol)

Per California's Business and Professions Code, "dispensing" is:

the furnishing of drugs or devices upon a prescription from a physician, dentist, optometrist, podiatrist, veterinarian, or naturopathic doctor pursuant to Section 3640.7, or upon an order to furnish drugs or transmit a prescription from a certified nurse-midwife, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, naturopathic doctor pursuant to Section 3640.5, or pharmacist acting within the scope of his or her practice. (b) "Dispense" also means and refers to the furnishing of drugs or devices directly to a patient by a physician, dentist, optometrist, podiatrist, or veterinarian, or by a certified nurse-midwife, nurse practitioner, naturopathic doctor, or physician assistant acting within the scope of his or her practice. (From: CA Codes (bpc:4015-4045)).

The fact that you are making a decision to hand out prepackaged medications listed as controlled substances is enough to make me think that you should have a DEA Number and a Furnishing License that authorizes you to furnish controlled substances in California.

I want to make sure no one else runs into the same problem I just did due to this post. The info on here from Juan de la cruz is no longer valid, as least for the state of CA. I did what he suggested (applied for my DEA and furnishing number at the same time) and got a very angry phone call from the DEA stating that they were throwing away my application and my non-refundable $731 application fee. Why? Because my application was not considered to be complete since I did not already have my furnishing number. FYI-I called the BRN and they state that it takes approx 6 weeks for them to process the furnishing license application; meanwhile, the DEA takes only about 1 week. You can see where I ran into trouble. I hope this post saves someone the anguish of throwing $731 away for nothing.

Oh my Gosh! I just turned in an online application for DEA license! I turned my furnishing license application 2 weeks ago. This means, I'll get a very angry phone call too? Why didn't I read all the way through??? Just wasted $731!

@zabio95 Maybe not. You had a two week head start with your furnishing license. I did mine at the same time. The DEA didn't call me until about a month in. I think you'll be fine.

Has your check cleared? I called the BON and they were very nice at the advanced NP department and once I told her my dilemna she was willing to help. If you still do not have it I suggest you call them.

I have been a CPNP for 25 years. When I graduated it wasn't an option to get a furnishing license or DEA number. I called in prescriptions under my supervising pediatrician's name. For the last 11 years I have been doing pediatric hospice care and have not been in a PNP position. Now my agency is exploring expanding there providers to include NPs. I went to the CA Board of Nursing and it says I need to provide proof of completing an advanced practice pharmacology course as part of a NP program. I have maintained my CPNP certification and have completed the required pharmacology CEUs but I don't think these will meet the requirements. Does anyone have any suggestions how i can obtain a furnishing license at this point in my career?
