Hi Everyone, I am currently in a Pediatric Critical Care NP program but am now getting nervous about job prospects. It seems like hospitals may not be as ready for this role in many areas as I originally thought. Does anyone have any insight or advice? THANK YOU SO MUCH!

:balloons: hello and welcome to allnurses.com:balloons:

great to have you in the picu forum. i personally do not know any cc nps, but, yes, they are utilized in the larger institutions of larger cities.

here is a link to the pediatric nurse practitioner organization, if you have not visited here before now:

good luck with your career choice. very intriguing.

Thank you so much for the links and support. I hope it pans out. It's slightly discouraging that I moved across the country to go to a great program and to get clinical experience in what is supposed to be the best children's hosp. Turns out that the hosp. isn't really using NP's in the PICU anymore; at least not in any roles that can be used as a preceptorship for students. Oh well.

I can imagine how frustrating that has to be. Have you checked out other hospitals in the area or elsewhere? Not knowing how large that particular city is, you might need to relocate again. An NPs life is wonderful when we finally find the area/facility that supports our level of expertise. Jobs are out there and we as NPs must offer an "attractive package" (experience) in order to land the better jobs.

Please try and not get discouraged. Do your homework now regarding locations that utilize the CC NP. Good luck. And, remember I am here for you when you need information and/or to just vent....:)

I know that Children's Medical Center in Dallas uses PICU NP's. Not sure if they are hiring, but I would definitely get in touch with them. They have a very large ICU that is broken down into trauma, heart, and medical. They are the only Children's hospital in Texas that has a level 1 designation.

Here is there website: http://www.childrens.com

Good luck!
