Passed ANCC FNP

I just wanted to share my thoughts as many of you are taking your boards soon. I passed my ANCC FNP exam today. In January I sent my application to ANCC and pre-registered to have my transcripts sent from my school to both the ANCC and BON. I graduated on May 11 and my transcripts were sent from my school on May 20th. It took about a week and a half for my transcripts to arrive and be processed at ANCC/BON. I got my ATT from ANCC on May 31st. During this time I decided to register for the AANP exam as well (figured if I failed one I'd have the other to fall back on). AANP processed my application fairly quickly and I got the ATT one week (today) after my ANCC (except you really have to wait like another week to actually schedule exam for AANP as prometric has to give you the identification number whereas ANCC gave me the number immediately...so that was kind of weird).

Before I had scheduled my exam I started reading through Fitzgerald Nurse Practitioner Certification Examination and Practice Preparation 3rd Ed. I also have her CD's as well as Barkley's but really didn't like hearing their voices and I don't do well with auditory learning anyways. One week before my exam I started to really study - I finished the Fitzgerald book - while studying I actually made notes of things I needed to remember or what I thought they might ask me - so I have a huge notebook of notes that I intended to go review but never did. I still think this really helped instill some of the tough stuff. I also did the APEA Q Bank and I think it was helpful although a little pricey. I started to memorize the questions/answers after awhile so that wasn't helpful. 5 days before the exam I bought 5 practice exams from familynpprep.com and I did one each evening after studying - I recommend this! I studied for like 12 hours each day one week before the exam - I did this for NCLEX too and it seems to work for me. I went back through the questions and read the rationales for each one - even ones that I got right. Another thing I did was research something that I didn't know if it came up in the practice exam - terms, meds, diseases etc. I think that was very helpful. One last thing I did was I bought the ANCC book from the ANCC site - it also was pricey but contained extremely valuable information about the dreaded part of the ANCC which was the professional/legal section. At least read the first few chapters if you can as some of the questions were derived directly from there. Unfortunately I did not have time to finish the ANCC book prior to my test, but I actually plan on referring to it for practice as well - it's nice and thorough. I know a lot of people don't want to sign up for the ANCC d/t the legal questions etc. but actually it did not seem like there were THAT many and I think you could use common sense to answer quite a few of them. That being said, the questions that I really had NO CLUE were some of the legal/research ones whereas the clinical ones were pretty straight forward.

WHEW! So hopefully that helps anyone studying right now. I know I was really looking for some udpated information while I was studying and couldn't find much.

ps. my exam did not tell me I passed right away - the screen was blank for a long time then just told me thank you. I had to wait until the lady printed it out and gave me the paper saying I passed.

Have no earthly idea. Everyone in my class is waiting and we are locally close to the ANCC. It's ridiculous. We have all called, but we just get the run around. Supposedly it takes 4 to 6 weeks from the time they receive your information ...I have NO idea why it takes so long to review a few items ...one would think they would have a data base already of all the major university programs and what their courses are ...I'm not that happy about it right now.

Did you already have your ANCC validation of education form filled out and sent in by your university?

Thank you for posting and sharing the familynpprep.com scores! I took test 2 today and got 400...so feeling pretty good, but they are also great to see what I need to work on! I've heard 350 is passing. Does the test center tell you your score on the real exam?

I did not receive a test score when I finished the real exam - I don't know if they send it out with the certificate and pin, but i havent received those yet.

I think anything >350 is a great goal with those tests - so good job!

Had it filled out ..sent it in WITH my paperwork myself, but they said that was fine also ...they have my stuff and have sent me an email that it is under review ...it's just baloney. I went to Marymount Univ which is right near Bethesda where they are ... if they can't figure out which courses we took, then there is something wrong ...

Hey there -- was trying to get back to this post to let cougdog know I passed the ANCC! Even got a new job, too! lol.

ALL your suggestions were fantastic ..I ended up buying the ancc yellow book, and so glad I did ...what a great resource!

The family NP prep was also fantastic ...if only for the way it simulates the online test taking experience.

I knew a lot of the questions right off the bat ...and of course, some of them seemed like they came from outer space and I had no idea how to answer ...but something in me just knew how to reason through it, because I just did so many darn practice questions!

Anyway, thanks again for taking the time to post and help out your fellow NP's around the country!

SOM-Congrats on passing boards! Did you take them before the recent change or after the change? I'm sure you feel a load lifted off your chest. I am planning to take the ANCC/FNP exam. Of the review materials that you studied from...which one helped you the most on the test. I have the yellow book from ANCC and I also have 5 test from familynpprep.com .....this thread has been really helpful.

I'm getting really nervous as the time approaches!

Any additional advice, hints, tips, I will definitely appreciate!

Thank You,

MC

I think I took it before the change, but I doubt it matters. Another thing that really helps is doing ALL the free practice questions on the ancc web site. They are there -- just look for them -- do them ALL, the ones before and after the test changes.

Try not to be nervous, really. It's hard, but if you prepare, you will do fine.

What helped me was buying the yellow ancc book, reading as much as possible, doing their practice questions and the free ones. A colleague of mine and I also bought a package of free practices questions from ancc and split the cost.

Know a little about Hippa, medicare/Medicaid, theories ...honestly, the yellow ancc book helped me the most, and it's a great resource to keep afterwards in practice.

Good luck ...

SOM-

I will definitely do the practice questions on the ANCC website. In addition to those, are you referring to the questions that you can buy from the ANCC. It comes with 2 sample test banks and you can review them over and over w/rationales?

I have the yellow book! It's great...I need to reread the first few chapters again, as was suggested previously.

Nervous....I'm trying not to be! But I'm doing my best so hopefully I will pass the first time around!

Thank you once again!

Nervous...but I PASSED! MUCH harder than I would have ever thought this exam would be. I would definitely get the yellow book from ANCC, familynpprep.com questions were really helpful and use Fitzgerald (attend a seminar or buy the CDs). If anyone has any questions about the new format....please let me know.

MC1906 I just read your post and even though its a few months old, congrats on passing the exam. I was wondering about the new format of the exam. I mean I know the format hasn't changed just the content per se. So far I have been studying using the Fitzgerald review course. I bought the online reveiw course which gives you access to each module 4 times. I have gone through each module once and am now going through each one a second time taking notes on the things I think are things I need to study. I am almost done with my second go around of the modules. After that I was planning on going back to my NP book that I used during my program and reading it, trying to correlate it with what I studied already from Fitzgerald and taking notes on anything pertinent that jumps out at me. I also have the Fitzgerald review book which I've read through a few times. I just noticed the yellow ANCC FNP review book on the ANCC website last night and was wondering if I should buy it? I saw that it was published in 2010 so I was wondering if it was up to date with the new exam. But you said you studied from it and it helped you? I was wondering if I should just buy it. I don't know what else to do to study. I am always afraid to buy those NP questions on random websites because I never know if they are going to be good enough practice material for the test. Like are they going to be representative of actual test questions? Sometimes they seem just a bit too easy. Also, how long did you study before taking the test? I have to pay for my test and wait the 3-4 weeks it takes for them to approve my application, so that puts me at late November, early December at the earliest. I would really like to take it before the end of the year. Any pointers you can provide would be really helpful!
