Nursing model for physicians?

I recently read the book "Baby Doctor" by Perry Klass, and one of her assessments of her medical school training stood out to me. She wrote that although she was learning an enormous amount of information, she wasn't learning about the things that are REALLY important to patients. During her pregnancy, she has many questions that she could not answer as a physician. I also thought of this because a colleague explained to me how the doctor diagnosed the problem and determined the treatment, but it was the nurse practitioner who discussed the impact that his Dx would have on his life/relationships/work/children/hobbies.

Has anyone ever heard of a course that physicians could take that would teach a nursing approach to illnesses/health? Obviously, it would not be the same as being trained under the nursing philosophy, but it might help them connect more with patients (and lower malpractice!). I also realize that many MD/DOs may not be interested in this, but several seem to have a genuine respect for the profession/philosophy of nursing :)

The "nursing model" is perhaps not the only model you are asking about.

Many "alternative or complementary" practitioners have the same philosophy. There is a book I saw recently written by a nurse practitioner who practices women's health from a holistic prespective. There are also a lot of books on the subject. Try to focus on how you would "treat" someone if the electricity went out...know what I mean? Also there is an article on my site (in my profile) about "Doing too Much." Ask me more if you like and I'll respond later. I'm in Kathmandu, Nepal at the moment in an internet cafe.
