by ender33 Jun 26, '08hello, im interested in becoming a nurse practitioner, and have read around what the job is like. I just wanted to know if NP's do RN work, or there completely different, where a NP is more of a physician. And since many of you are RN's could you tell me about the np's that work at your hospital?what they do etc.
-thank you

- Jun 26, '08 by VivaRNThere is a forum under the specialty tab titled "advanced practice nursing", there are a lot of threads there about nurse practitioners that might be helpful to you.
- Jun 26, '08 by classicdamedepends on where the NP works. Our NP in the ER sees many patients who do not require a physician, or will suture someone per MD order, etc. Another NP is director over two depts and manages an out-pt clinic for wound care. Some I know in town work with MD's and do a lot of what the lay person thinks is MD work, but their scope of practice is actually outlined by the state in which we live.

My pre NP days: NP's I worked with in the hospitals made rounds, ordered and interpreted tests, H&Ps, D/C summaries, etc.. The PA's did about the same but also went OR...
My NP days in the hospital: Ditto what I said above. But yes if the patient asked me to help him/her to the bathroom I did. I did a lot of consulting with the nurses when I was making rounds they asked me questions and I asked them questions.
