I am going to be starting an FNP program at the beginning of next year. I currently am and RN with my BSN and have been out of school for 2 years. I work as a clinic nurse in a rural health clinic. What kind of material should I brush up on before going back to school. I dont want to start out behind everyone who has been working in hospitals and other areas that would have more experience than me.

What materials would you recommend?

Specializes in family nurse practitioner.

You will be ahead of them since you are in a clinic. That's perfect. I wished I had office/clinic experience when I was a student. I think the best thing you can do is start reading Pharmacology. Get this book called pharmcotherapy handbook 8th edition by Barbara wells. Its a great starter book. That will really help you. Also use Epocrates and up to date. Down load those on your phone. Hope this helps. Best wishes

As a nurse who went from a busy SICU to a clinic nurse position I will be watching this thread. Sometimes I feel I am losing all my critical thinking skills at this job - but in a clinic I have a lot of one on one time with our physician who is very hands on with teaching me about what he is assessing as well as the rationale on what he is prescribing for our patients. I hope that gives me a knowledgeable background but I cannot help but worry if I will be lacking behind my hospital-experienced peers.
