FNP and other questions

i suppose it all depends where one is located, aspenice.

the np would need to relocate is about all the advice i can give, if they wanted to be in clinical practice and could not find a job. i know some nps who will not relocate and are working as rns in the hospitals. and, i know some who have gone into teaching.

what do you mean advantage/disadvantage of a generic msn program? the np program is an msn with emphasis as advanced practice nurse and several specialties.

Well, I want to know if I went for the generic MSN program what my options wuld be after I gradaute and would it be better to go for an advanced speciality? With FNP, you really can only be in family practice, right? With a generic MSN you can build on areas you enjoy whereas FNP you can't?

I don't think you understand. A "generic" MSN will not be an MSN with an emphasis in any advanced practice specialty.

You would need to enter a program for the specialty you seek (PNP, NNP, FNP, ACNP, etc.) and then sit for national certification in that area either just before graduation or shortly thereafter.

Yes, FNP does family practice; birth through death and everything in between.

I understand the generic program. I guess I am trying to figure out f the generic program is a waste of 3 years of schooling if I have to go back for a specialty? So, I am guessing the only thing I can do with the generic MSN is be a floor nurse and gain experience and then pick an area and get certificates, etc? Or go for a Ph.D after I complete the MSN?

I am just trying to get a clear picture of my career path as I am interested in several areas.
