FNP Admissions

  1. Just curious if being male is a positive when applying for a NP program? In regards to increasing diversity in the field. I do not want to turn this into male vs. female post, just wanting some opinions. I am supposed to here from Vanderbilt this month in regards to admission.

I hope being a male is seen as a positive. I am a male and have applied to one MSN program and should hear in March. Good luck on your admissions. The time between submitting my app and getting the letter is dragging.

I do think that being a male gives a plus to the whole NP profession. There's just not a lot of male NPs. I was the only male in my class when I was a student NP. It's good to know that more and more males are interested in becoming NPs.

Now, on the other side of the advance practice spectrum...I notice MORE male CRNAs out there than there are females. Since I am NOW a SRNA and will be a CRNA soon, I am noticing more males in the CRNA profession than there are females. Quite different.

I graduated from Vanderbilt and every year more male students are applying and being admitted. Right now, it's around 10+%, equal to that of minority NP students. There are several male NP faculty at Vandy for mentors and encouragement.

    Good luck!

Congratulations, Big Ranger on your admissions to the FNP program!

I am a fellow applicant to Vanderbilt (well you are now beyond being an applicant), and am waiting for a letter. Each day my hair stands on end a little bit more. I live in California, so the mail is slower I know.

I applied the third week of January and was told by phone they send the letters out around now, and applied first choice the to ANP program, second to the FNP.

I can see you live in Kentucky, closer by mail to TN. Would you mind letting me know when you applied, because I understand they review their applications on a rolling basis?

P.S. I hope to see you there next year, and I think it's great that there are more male nurses now. I've had a male friend who is a nurses (a CRNA) and have interacted as a fam member of a patient with male nurses. I enjoy working with people of both sexes and find professions being dominated by only one sex are often limited.

I applied about the same time as you, so you should be getting your letter anytime! I hope you get in and good luck!!!
